Balance. That’s what separates India Pale Ales. And that’s the difference between the Southampton IPA and most others.
Southampton IPA is balanced between the hopped-up West Coast-style IPAs and the Old World characteristics of a traditional European IPA. You could say that Southampton IPA is located somewhere between Europe and California, figuratively and literally.
Phil uses three grains and a blend of three American and two English hop varieties to make this complex and delicious IPA. It’s full of floral hop aroma and has fruity apricot and grapefruit overtones. It has an assertive hop flavor and a refreshing hop bitterness while still showing plenty of caramel malt character to balance the flavor.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a bright orange-amber color with a huge orange-white head. The aroma was a very pleasant mix of strong piney, resiny and fruity hops. The flavor was dryish, bitter, tangy and resiny with notes of peppery and floral hops. Very rough with a long rough floral hop finish. Ok.

Nice paleish copper coloured body with a light white head. Aroma of pale malt, slightly stale hops, apricots and a nice fresh pine smell that lasts forever. Medium-bodied; Strong hoppy flavour up front with a good malt backbone and a subtle fruity flavour that perpetuates throughout the tasting. Overall, a bit lacking, since the hops don’t last, but a good beer throughout. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased by Phil (haddon90) from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 25-December-2005.

Re-rate 2/29/12: Bottle sample at a tasting at Ariel’s place. Thanks Ariel. Hazy golden. Aroma of malt, some fruitiness and some floral hops. Flavor starts sweetish and continues with moderate hoppy bitterness. Medium-bodied. Decent. 6/3/6/3/13=3.1

Bottle. Pours a deep amber with a bit of a head that dies down as I sit and think about all of this. Aromas are mild for an IPA... a bit of citrus and that’s about it. Hops pick it up a notch or two in the flavor... there is a nice and prickly pine presence, yet a fairly well developed caramel mlt backbone to make it a little more English.

Off-white head that leaves lacing. Orange amber color. Citrusy, piny hops in the aroma. Moderate hops that stick from front to finish. Little citrusy. Medium thickness, but it lets you know that it is there.

Typical candy IPA aroma. Slightly cloudy iced tea color. Difficult to take hops bitterness greets the tongue on the first taste and keeps coming with every sip thru the session. Bitter chewing on soapy grapefruit rind taste that lingers forever. Good thing somebody gave this to me, I certainly would not buy it myself. Perfect example of good IPA, could even pass for a double IPA. Barely any carbonation. Every aspect of this brew is overwhelming hops. Annoying hop finish. I recently had Southern Tier IPA which was much more of a gentleman than this.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of sliffy. Pours a cloudy, pale golden with a white head leaving some lacework. Fresh, citrusy nose. Medium body, lightly sweet malts with lovely citrus notes. Dry, light bitter finish. A straight and subtle east coast IPA. 310807

12 fl oz bottle. Pours light hazy orange with a lacing white head. Dry malty almost woody nose with a light fruity hops note. Dry malty with a decent amount of bitterness kicking in at the finish.

Hazy golden color. It’s a pleasant beer, with a respectable hopping leading to a long final, quite close to the original style; not much malt body, nor powerful aromatic hopping.

A mild but pleasant ipa. The aroma has some hops, but they are not intense, and have a citrus character. Flavor is balanced by lightly bitter hops and sweet malt.
