Balance. That’s what separates India Pale Ales. And that’s the difference between the Southampton IPA and most others.
Southampton IPA is balanced between the hopped-up West Coast-style IPAs and the Old World characteristics of a traditional European IPA. You could say that Southampton IPA is located somewhere between Europe and California, figuratively and literally.
Phil uses three grains and a blend of three American and two English hop varieties to make this complex and delicious IPA. It’s full of floral hop aroma and has fruity apricot and grapefruit overtones. It has an assertive hop flavor and a refreshing hop bitterness while still showing plenty of caramel malt character to balance the flavor.

A hazy golden IPA with a thin creamy white head. Aroma of light hops and citrus, a bit faint. In mouth, a good biscuitty malt, with light sweet grapefruits, good hops, and light berry notes. Medium bodied. A classy IPA. Bought at BOTW, Fall 2006.

Bottle courtesy of Moejuck: Poured a deep orangey color ale with large foamy head with good retention. Aroma of piney and citrus hops is dominating and very enjoyable. Taste is a mix between some piney hops with some citrus and bitter characteristics as well as a good light toffee malt base. Full body with some adequate carbonation. This beer doesn’t break any new ground but is very satisfying and refreshing.

Bottle from beastiefan2k, thanks Eugene! Pour is golden orange amber with a normal white head. Aroma is mostly malt, with some earthy, grassy and finally some citrus hops. Taste is malt forward, but a nice transition into the bitter hop finish. The citrus aroma translated more to a bitter flavor than lemon, orange or lime. As this warmed, I picked up on an almost metallic aftertaste. The body is nice and big for an IPA. Overall, I enjoyed this beer as an example of a malt focused IPA, though it was not as hop focused as I had expected.

I am finally getting around to drinking this beer. I have always thought that Southampton and IPA are almost like an oxymoron. I love the brewery (even the stuff made outside of the Hamptons) and Its just that I never wanted to venture this way. 12 oz bottle poured into small goblet glass. The best part is the color if this beer, pours an orangish/dark golden color. Medium clarity, visible carbonation, and a small head. Aroma is what West Coast IPA is "supposed" to be but not so well translated. Its hoppy with citrus, a musty pine, slightly spoiled sweet hop, and what seems like slightly aged caramel maltiness. A bit out of wack, which is what this beer is all about. Taste is pretty citric, slightly acidic, a bitter taste, An unpleasant bitter taste leaves a slightly resinous aftertaste. Medium-light body with a slightly spiked mouthfeel. Pretty strong bitterness.

Pours a hazy gold into a shaker. Offwhite foamy head top hats and volcanos. Upfront sweet malts quickly overtaken by a strong and lasting bitter rind and alcohol burn finish.

Sampled at the Odds and Ends Tasting on 8/16/06: Clear golden color with a medium thin off-white head and thin spotty lacing. The aroma is hoppy with muted pine and citrus in the background. Medium-bodied with mild hops and malt flavors, as well as a bit of citrus. The finish is dry and short, with a mildly bitter hops aftertaste. Above average overall, although not by much. Seems like there should be more to this.

Medium gold body with a white head. Malt dominated aroma with some light flowery hops as an afterthought. Lots of hop bitterness with some buttery notes in the flavor. The parts of this one just didn’t fit in for me.

Bottle Pours a clear medium amber with a smallish off-white head. Quickly receding sparse lacing. Nice deep malty aromas with robust hoppiness. Flavors are very bitter and misungnthe clean citeusy flavors I was expecting. Late woody bitterness. Moderate feel and fairly soft carbonation. Had higher hopes

Paid $4.99 for a 22oz bomber at Wine Warehouse, Charlottesville. Pours medium cloudy amber with an inch of white head. Aroma of hops, orange, and grapefruit. Nice hop flavor with a hint of dirtiness, malt, and grapefruit. Kinda thin and not as full bodied as I like my IPAs to be.
