Flashback Anniversary Ale is an India Brown Ale with 6.8% ABV. This is the first beer we’ve made here that uses one single hop variety (Cascade) in the recipe in five separate additions. The fresh Cascade hop aroma and flavor is perfectly balanced with the dark roasted grains, making Flashback a very unique beer. We’re calling it an India Brown Ale to help illustrate its flavor to the consumer. It’s hoppy like an IPA but dark and roasty like a Brown Ale. Put them together and voila! Flashback at its finest!…

bottle - Pours clear amber with a one finger head. The aroma is of citrus hops with some caramel malt. It tastes of lightly roasted caramel malt and moderately strong bitterness with a touch of citrus. The hops seem to lack the crispness I enjoy though and the overall impression is a bit lackluster.

Pours clear copper color with off white head. Caramel malt aroma with some pine hoppiness. Caramel malt flavor with a weird metallic taste and some coffee. Mild pine hoppiness. Medium body with averge carbonation. Something about this beer just doesn’t sit well with me.

Bottle. Pours a light brown with a small fizzy head and aromas of soapy hops and apple juice. Flavor is kinda appley, has a little bit of toffee, some nuts and a grassy and soapy hops presence. It’s thin and slippery on the palate and leaves a little bit of a resin taste in the finish. Decent enough stuff.

Pours a clear dark copper - an unusual beer, this - it combines aggressive american hoppiness with the a malt profile that is more like a british-style brown - nuttiness, some biscuity character, and a hint of leafy, tobacco-like flavors - these don’t work as well with the flavors imparted by the cascades (citrus and nuts don’t work well together) - a touch of diacetyl and vegetal qualities - meh - not terrible, but I’m kind of sorry I bought a whole sixer of this.

Re-rate 3/21/11: Bottle. Beer of the month club. As "India-Style Brown Ale". Clear deep amber with a medium beige head. Piney hops aroma with caramelly notes and a bit of cookies. Flavor has a some caramelly malt sweetness, and quite a bit of resinous and earthy hops bitterness. Medium-bodied. 6/3/6/3/12=3

Rerate - the colour is a beautifull dark copper, but the brew is much too hoppier then i remember, the bitterness is especially over the top, the aroma is more authentic - coffee and barnyard - with some fruity hops, overall quite drinkable but much too hoppy. At a tasting, thanks David, clear rusty dark orange colour, aromas of orange marmalade, peach, oxdised and barnyard notes and a touch of honey, flavours of sourdough bread and nuts with an empathic but not overpowering bitterness. Very nice. (8,3,8,3,15)

Bottle: Beautiful amber pour with a finger of creamy tan head. Rich aroma is ripe with citrus hops, caramel, toffee, and candied sugar. Kind of vinous; it has that aged barleywine feel. First sip is a huge mouthful of citrus and floral hops, yet not any lingering bitterness. More caramel, toffee, and sugary aged vinous notes. A little later in the glass I notice a chocolate presence and even some earthy notes. Still, the lingering taste is sweet aged citrus hops. Delightful!

Smells of oak and marigold Clear brown, thin white head, good lacing. Awfully yeasty flavor of dirt and twigs, with an oaky fig finish. Even a bit musty, but it doesn’t really work that well for me. This is a dirty beer, in a good sense, but not as well executed as it could be. Not quite on par with Terrapin or DFH’s take on the style.

Very well hopped for a brown ale, this is clearly an apa. Hop aorma with dry flavor of hops and malt. Brown color. Dry finish. Good.

Bottle. Poured a dark auburn with a thin light brown head. Aroma is a nice balance of piney hops and grainy malts. Flavor starts out smooth and malty and ends with a bit of a pine hop kick.
