Flashback Anniversary Ale

12 ounce bottle from Wine & Beer Westpark, Richmond, VA. Pours a clear ruby-brown color with a large tan head with good head retention. Aroma of nutty malts, chocolate, floral and citrus hop notes. Taste is chocolate, nuts and bitter hops notes. A bit of lysol-like astringency.

Deep rusty brown copper coloured body with a tan head and a ruby-tinted hue - nice. Aroma of potent alcohol, oak, vanilla and pit fruits at first, seemingly like a barley wine. Also some piney hops come out in the nose and perhaps a bit of yeast. Medium to Full-bodied; Mild malty flavour up front with a plentiful amount of oak and vanilla tucked in with figs and raisins along for the ride with some noticeable hops too. Aftertaste shows a bit of bitter malt, some hops and a dose of alcohol and sweetness (pit fruits) on the palate - nice! Overall, I wouldn’t really classify this as a brown, but if so, this is my favourite brown ale to date. However, as an american pale, it ranks above a lot of others due to the flavour complexity, the pit fruits and caramel sweetness and a good glow to the beer. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 02-October-2009, sampled at home in Washington on 16-October-2009.

(Bottle, Monk’s Café, Wallingatan, Stockholm) Reddish brown colour with frothy, beige head. Malty nose with notes of toffee, chocolate and toasty grain. Malty, fruity taste with toffee, chocolate and generous doses of citrussy hops in a bitter finish. More than medium body, balanced sweetness. Tasty citrussy hop character backed up by a solid caramel/chocolate malt body gives this beer a brilliant balance. Lovely beer!

12oz bottle pours clear garnet with a teased up lasting light tan head. The aroma is full of that citrusy spicy near earthy cascade hoppiness to go along with some roasted malts and a touch of cherry fruit like esters. The taste stings first with orange peel and tangelo citrus hop bitterness rounded out with a tingle of spice and then sweeter with malts, a touch of toffee and hints of late addition to the boil hop flavor. Toward the finish the hops become more bitter along with the roast becoming a bit astringent creating a somewhat dry and refreshing finish. The citrus hop and spice hop bitterness linger for a while. Nice tasting brew. Listed here as a Brown. It is far from a brown.

Draught. Delicious but it’s hard to tell how to categorise this. Hoppy aroma like an IPA. Colour like a pub brown, say Newcastle Brown, flavour lekker, but like nothing else. Much roast, ’n bietjie hop. With a very hoppy lingering finish

Pours deep mahogany into a shaker. Fluffy brown head with good retention leaves sheet lacing as it slowly recedes. Dark caramel and grapefruit aromas. Crisp with upfront chocolate and a lasting grapefruit and resin finish.

bottle Pours amber, creamy beige head. Aroma is malty, notes of caramel and hops. Flavor, caramel malts, some yeasty aspects and signature Boulder beer. Some chocolate and bready notes in the finish. Some underlying hops come add a nice mild bitterness. Finish is malty, flavor of chocolate / cocoa powder. Tasty!

Bottle Pours out a dark amber topped with a sand head. Aroma is of floral hops, nuts, and a sweet malt. Taste more of the nuts a nice floral hop and a good light grapefruit peel bitter end. not bad but for your 30th Anniversary you would think maybe something over the top.

12 oz bottle. Pours a brown color with a small whitish head. Aroma is malt sweetness, with touches of roasted flavors and a nice, solid hop touches! Flavor is a interesting mix of hoppy flavor with the strength of brown ale.

Bottled at Monk’s Café Wallingatan, Stockholm. Deep copper colour, mid-sized coarse head. Tpasty with plenty of orangey hops. Dry with clean, rounded mouthfeel. Dusty orangey hops grow in intensity to bring immense bitterness. Conbines roasty malt with citrusy hops really well.
