Each version of this beer uses the same base recipe but only one variety of hop is used in each. This allows the drinker to experience the unique characteristics of a single hop variety on it’s own. They are made in a similar way to Restoration but only conditioned for 3 months prior to bottling and there is only 1300 numbered bottles made in a year. Trials were carried out with a number of different hop varieties and the low alpha "aroma" type hops gave some of the most interesting results.
Vertigo "VC" @ 9.8% ABV (uses only Cascade hops) - amber in colour with an aroma of spice, pine and woody oak. The flavour is sweet caramel, toffee, vanilla, pine and grapefruit leading to a resinous peppery spicy finish. Status - made in 2009 only.

Bottle at home, 03/04/16. Murky amber orange with a moderate off white covering. Nose is bitter orange, dusty hops, orange marmalade, caramel wafer. Taste comprises sweet malt, candied fruit peel, jiucy hop, mandarin, light mineral strokes, caranelised sugar. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, semi drying close with a sweet finale, moderate hop bitterness and a boozey kick. Not bad to be honest and considering the age, easy going sipper.

275ml bottle from Beers of Europe, bit of a bargain as it’s approaching BBE. Pours clear golden amber, thin ring of white head. Aromas of orange soap, slight raw booze. Taste is a little musty, but we’ll forgive that given the age. Taste is sweet, more barley wine territory now, but noticeable oranginess from the hops, if not much bitterness. Enjoyable.

275ml bottle from Beer Hawk - Very similar to the VF - Orangey amber body, thin off white head. Orange peel aroma and flavour. Fairly sweet - just like a barley wine as opposed to an IPA as with the other. Alcohol warmth is there as it goes down to give another good finish, just not as oily rich. Excellent again!

Bottle care of Leighton. It pours deep amber with a small off-white head. The nose is earth, toast, muffin, orange sponge cake, citrus peel and brown bread. The taste is bitter-sweet, bready, orange sponge cake, muffin, apricot and light alcohol. Medium body and moderate carbonation. A bit hot and sweet, but pretty alright actually!

Bottle shared at the Scopey 5K tasting. Snagged at the Kris Wines a few years back. Pours clear, vibrant gold with a creamy head. The nose has a bit of alcohol presence along with ripe citrus and mild, bready malts. Fairly sweet with more pronounced bready malts now, dried citrus and other fruits, mild earth. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation and oily mouthfeel. Light warmth to finish with sugary bread, light toffee, suggestions of oxidation, more aged fruits, faint woody dryness. Very nice though not as good as the VF.

275ml bottle [#1273 of 1300]. Cloudy reddish golden colour with small, frothy, diminishing, minimally lacing, white head, permanenly leaving a thin layer. Fruity, hoppy aroma with notes of orange liquor, tangerine, a touch of toasted caramel malt, toffee, peppermint, minimal hints of oak, signs of storage and oxidation. Taste is moderately sweet malty, fruity notes of tangerine, blood orange, hints of Aperol liquor, esin, a spicy peppery touch, some peppermint; lasting finish, slightly sticky palate. Interesting complex and extraordinary.

Bottled Spring 2009!!! Hazy gold amber beer. No real head. Low carbonation. Semi dry palate. Toffee malt, salty caramel. A little dried fruit and brandy. Marmalade orange. Dry finish with a bit of aniseed alcohol. Can’t remember where I got this but it was a cheek selling an 18 month old IPA! Okay as a barleywine.
