Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from the local Co-Op. pours clear amber with a small, foamy off-white head. Light sweet flavour with notes of lightly toasted malts, British yeast, a little earth and leaf, subtle caramel. Light bodied with average carbonation. Sweet finish, more bready malts, nips of toffee and mild leafy bitterness. Drinks fine.

Spotty beige head on a copper coloured body. Sweet, malt & toffee aroma. Medium bodied, sharp with smoother back. Toffee, malt, peppery & spicy fruit tastes with a tangy finish. Decent.

Cask at Borough Arms, Crewe. Pours the classic “bitter brown” with a small off-white head and good lacing. The solid aroma features mainly malts and raisins. Sweet malts are the brief initial sensation in the mouth, before sharp bitterness comes through with autumn fruits and fruit cake, plus underlying caramel. Much later there are traces of spices to be found. Overall varies randomly between slightly sweet and slightly bitter. Finish is malty. This is a good traditional strong bitter.

Bottle from Asda. Pours a clear copper brown colour with a thin white head. Aromas of caramel, toasty bread, dry dark fruit and a touch of spice. Taste has the same notes again. Nice lingering malty aftertaste. Medium body, low carbonation and smooth mouthfeel. Good.

Clear amber with a foamy off-white head and an aroma of sweet fruit and caramel. The mouthfeel is smooth, and thin, with a touch of bitterness behind the sweet malt flavour, with some berry fruits and caramel coming through. Dry bitterness predominates in the finish
