Draught at Ølbaren, Copenhagen
Black color; creamy head. The aroma has some an earthy character, with a mix of roasted malts, fruity hops, Chinese black bean sauce, light manure; not bad, but quite weird. The mouthfeel is at the same time quite dry (because of the strong presence of roasted malts) and smooth; as said, the dominant flavor comes from the roasted and black malt; there is a strong bitterness, but the hops can’t really show their qualities, while there is still the earthy/manure touch, that adds some complexity; then the final is too much focused on the burnt malt to be really pleasant. Correctly brewed, but not a style for me. Aggressive.

Bottle. An unclear, reddish black beer with a nice, dense, almost light brown head. Roasted, earthy and lemony nose with milky, flowery notes. Quite hoppy. The flavor has a nice bitterness to keep the roasted and earthy flavors company. Slightly lemony and flowery too. Bitterness and some roasted malts in the end. Full-bodied and nicely carbonated. Not ordinary in any way, and quite tasteful too I must say. 110401

On tap at The Grove, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire 23.04.11 Smoky on the nose with some sausageyness there, not entirely sure where that came from as I watched her pour this from the correct pump and it was indeed black with good bitterness, nice hoppy profile, in fact just very good. Look great pours black with an off-white head. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov14 3.6
