Rurik: the founder of the dynasty that bears his name which ruled Kievan Rus and later Muscovy until the 16th century. This land would later spawn the Muscovy Trading Company and become a base of trade between Russia and Britain. Two styles of beer comprise this blend, old ale and imperial stout. Both are of British origin with the later made famous by its exportation to the Russian Court. Rurik is the second beer in the Campeador series, a barrel-aged collaboration between Knightly Spirits and Cigar City Brewing. Limited release of 204 bottles.

Bottled. A pitch black beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma has notes of alcohol, coffee, and orver ripe fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, spices, and over ripe frutis, leading to a bitter finish.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of Plovmand. Bottle 136/204. Pours a cloudy opaque black with a small and lacing beige head. Tart lacto aroma, there’s clearly some bugs at play here - sweet roast. Solid body, overly carbonated, tart, woody accents atop some sweet roast and vanilla. Ends sweet with a slight roastiness. Nice alright, but the carbonation is offputting. 170611

A deep dark stout with a thin moka head. In aroma, a Bretty chocolate with soy sauce, quite nice. In mouth, a smooth sweet chocolate with herbs, chinotto, beautiful...and this is infected. Tasted with Orlando crew, Jan. 6 2010.

Thanks to cmillward. Definitely a solid beer, though the bottle may have had some minor problems. Trying it right after Hunahpu probably didn’t help things, either. Black pour with a creamy beige head. Mild sour/funk/lactic in the aroma, along with chocolate, cocoa, bourbon, brown sugar, vanilla, rum, raisins, mild roast and caramel. Taste was relatively sweet with some oak and tobacco coming through. Reminded me of Bitches Brew in an odd way. Mouthfeel was fairly smooth but could have been a bit bigger. Mild booze. Good beer and makes me curious to try more CCB specials, but not up to Hunahpu.

Bottle 750ml. @ Halloween Tasting by cgarvieuk.Clear dark dark red brown color with a large to huge, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly to fully lasting, light beige head. Aroma is light heavy malty, roasted, caramel, berry, barnyard, leather, fruity, sweet raisin, tart raisin. Flavor is light heavy sweet, light light tart - acidic and light heavy bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to lively. Certainly this was not what the brewer did make and did put in the bottle. but for me it worked very well ;O) [20101030]

Bottle shared by Adam, thanks! Poured near black with a chocolate dark brown head that dissipated slowly to the edges. Aroma had some roasted malts, smoke and spice with a slight sweet chocolate and grain note as well. Flavor starts with a bit of whiskey with a roasted malt base and some vanilla and sweet grains in the finish.

Bottle at Craigs big Edinburgh tasting, this bottle courtesy of ’Craig’, thanks mate. Shared in company of Craig, Stella, Jan, Charlotte, Fritz and Loz 30.10.10 Pours dark brown verging on black with a wonderful white creamy textured light beige head. Aroma I found to be a little funky almost with a touch of the Orval about it, not sure it’s meant to be like this, but nice anyway. Nice soft and smooth, creamy mouthfeel busy carbonation, some chocolate in the mouth, roasted malts and coffee, dark fruits, molassess and a nice warmth from the alcohol complete things here, great beer.
