Rurik: the founder of the dynasty that bears his name which ruled Kievan Rus and later Muscovy until the 16th century. This land would later spawn the Muscovy Trading Company and become a base of trade between Russia and Britain. Two styles of beer comprise this blend, old ale and imperial stout. Both are of British origin with the later made famous by its exportation to the Russian Court. Rurik is the second beer in the Campeador series, a barrel-aged collaboration between Knightly Spirits and Cigar City Brewing. Limited release of 204 bottles.

My 100th Cigar City Rating. 750mL pours deep darkness with mocha head. The aroma is oak, smooth bourbon, chocolate, dark roasted malts, toffee, caramel candy and then booze at the end of the draw. The taste is smooth too and obliviously complex with dark roasted malts, dark baker’s chocolate, then bourbon and some oak. It gets a bit dark roasted coffee and chicory like by about midway. I get vanilla, chocolate, chicory and pine hops coming to the surface and sliding into the after taste with a slight sweet bourbon warming booze experience.

Bottle number 3 of 204 from 2010 thanks to cquiroga. Pours with a black body and a tan head. Aroma is lactic, vinous, infection, berries, toffee, bourbon and woody. Taste is earthy, ashes, metallic, toffee, vinous, wood, brown sugar. Creamy mouthfeel, with light bubbles. Not bad for an infected beer.

Bottle 27 of 204 thanks to ditmier for sharing this. Pours out black topped with a cream tan head. Aroma was of sweet pit fruit, brown sugar, vanilla, and rich malts. Taste was more of the sweetness milk chocolate, brown sugar, vanilla, oak, caramel, toffee, and some light coffee.

Bottle number 164. Pours a watery, opaque brown/black with a very frothy, tan head. Nose is grainy, bready, a touch of funk, a little fruit, some coffee grounds. Flavor is sweet, chocolate, roasted malts, a little acid, smoke, coffee. Full bodied, acidic finish. A little weird.

bottle number 167 thanks to Cheeseman! You rule! Pours opaque black with a medium tan head. Aroma is all over the place. Complex as hell, obvious apple brandy, wet wood, fruity yeast, coffee and cocoa nibs. Flavor is semi-sweet red berries with a strong barrel presence and lingering coffee in the finish. Silky smooth mouth-feel. Really tons going on here, but everything complements and there are no dominate flavors overpowering the next. Kudos Cigar City!

Bottle number 42 of 204. Black with tan head. Nose of coffee, tobacco, chocolate, vanilla and butterscotch toffee. Taste of coffee, chocolate, vanilla, coffee, toffee, spice and an ever so slight sour note.

750 ml bottle at DC local tasting, courtesy of seabass. Almost black, dark brown head. Aroma of licorice and port wine. Taste of smooth, boozy chocolate. Much tastier than the Fergus Mor.

Bottle at Maltzillas World Cup 2010 tasting. Pours dark brown/black with thin tan head. Aromas of roasted malts, bourbon, hops, vanilla and oak. Slightly sweet flavor with a good dose of hops and bourbon with roasted malts, chocolate, vanilla and wood. Medium to full body with minimal carbonation. Big thanks to Chris for cracking open this one.
