Courtesy of markwise. Pours deep mahogany with tan head. The aroma is loaded with dark roasted malt goodness, modest tart notes, some chocolate, molasses, toffee and some mildly roasted malts. The taste has chocolate, dark roasted malts and molasses playing nicely together and then picking up additional modest notes of various tart like qualities. Nice.

12 ounce bottle given to me by a friend when I thought I’d missed the change to try this. You rock Chip! Pours a pitch black color with a medium brown head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts and whisky notes. The taste is tart cherries, rum, caramel, roasted malts, chocolate. This is definitely one of the infected bottles, but at least as of now it works well, though there is a faint and aid note which makes it seem as though something wicked this way comes. Medium-full bodied, opened 5/21/10.

Bottle at home ... thanks to RCL ... deep red brown ... thin tan head... alcohol and blackurant nose from a foot away ... deep roast and rum (could be whiskey) nose and again the blackcurrant ... very sweet front ... tart raspberry blackcurrant roast ... little sourness ... little creamy ... loads of alcohol ... little bit too much ... very fruity though ... amazingly fruity...

Pours black into a snifter. Mocha head quickly recedes to hug rim leaving spider lacing. Chocolate, espresso and rummy oak aromas. Sharp, sour rum-soaked tropical fruits upfront turning to a lasting dusty chocolate and espresso finish.

Fascinating aroma of whiskey, oak, vanilla, and lots of fudge, with coconut accents. Black viscous pour, thin brown head, some lacing. Flavor is prunes, whiskey, charred oak, hints of fudge. Great proportions, great beer, and I’m not an Avery fan. Wonderful crafting!

12 oz bottle graciously sent to me by alagnak. Bottled Jan 13, 2010 on label. Served in my Duvel tasting tulip. Pour is hazed solid black with a two inch dark khaki head that falls quick with not much lacing. Aroma is dark roasted malt, along with sweet cane sugar. In the back there is some evident alcohol, though it mixes nicely with the cane sugar to give a clean rum impression. Taste is licorice cane sugar roast malt, all sort of mixed up together but not integrated. The alcohol or the rum and barrel is drying and bright in the finish. The overall taste of this beer is an imperial stout with a shot of rum in it. It’s a nice stout, and the rum is high quality and clean, but ultimately its just not my sort of thing. Palate is medium to heavy bodied, coats the mouth thoroughly, finishes syrupy and and with alcohol. I think folks who like the big and bold barrel aged imperial stouts will really enjoy this. Thanks for sending this my way, Chris.

Bottle shared by bu11zeye at the Flying Saucer (it was their last bottle!). Pours with a tan head over a pitch black body. Aroma of booze, rum, brown sugar, sugar cookies, oak, tar, currants, molasses, and oats. Taste is chocolaty, with tar, wood and some bitter tobacco. Would probably mellow a bit with time and improve to the level of the aroma. Creamy mouthfeel and warming.
