Belgian Style India Pale Ale

When we set out to brew, we use imagination and salvation to guide us- not necessarily style guidelines. It’s the Belgian way. So, Ameri-Belgo and IPA both being styles, the branding begged for New Belgium whimsy to liven things up. Hmmm Belgo sounds like a Belgian disco. Hops like to party. Next thing you know, we bust out a disco-ball and brewers started groovin. Hops started hoppin. Add in an authentic Trappist yeast strain and the place brewed into a frenzy of citrus hoppy folly.

Sampled on tap at PIB, pours a clear golden orange with a large white head. Aroma of Belgian yeast and lots of piney hops. Flavour of Belgian yeast, piney hops, just enough caramel malt backing. Very hop-forward, with a Belgian twist. Very solid IPA.

8.0% Clear amber beer, little white head. Light hoppy nose. Light dry palate, a little soft. Orange and grapefruit hops with a surprising undertone of banana. Aniseed. A little creamy malt. More banana in the finish and some peel in the aftertaste. Not bad.

bottle - This brew smells of citrus and flowers with the hops and Belgian style yeast apparent. The flavor has good bitterness. It’s not terribly strong. The malts are well balanced, citrus notes, lively carbonation, and lingering bitterness. Very good.

Bottle. Pours a clear golden with a small off white head leaving sticky lacing. The aroma is a yeast and clove. Medium mouthfeel with a pepper and spice with dry finish. More of a belgian than IPA.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best by 2/12/2012. Mild gusher upon opening. Pours slightly cloudy golden amber color with a nice 2 finger dense off white head with amazing retention that reduces to a thick cap. Some nice lacing clings to the glass, with plenty of carbonation streaming up. Aromas of pepper, clove, grapefruit, bubblegum, biscuit, lemon, grass, and herbal spiciness. Very nice and well balanced aromas. Taste of big lemon, clove, pepper, grapefruit, bubblegum, biscuit, and herbal spiciness. Fair amount of herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, clove, bubblegum, biscuit, and herbal spices on the finish for a bit. Nice balance of Belgian qualities to hop flavors. Medium carbonation and body; with a very crisp and slightly resinous mouthfeel. Very smooth drinking, and alcohol is well hidden for 7% with only a slight warming after the finish. Overall this is an excellent and well executed Belgian IPA. Really balanced, enjoyable, and drinkable.

First impression was of a wheat beer crossed with an IPA. Pours a light, cloudy, yellow with a very thick, frothy head. Floral, hop aroma, with some of the esters of a wheat beer. Flavor of hop bitterness and citrus, with some other fruit notes (banana?) and even some light sourness present in the background. Nice, bitter finish to it.

Hazy copper coloured body with a very nice peach coloured glow and a thin, one centimetre tall off-white head. Aroma of pale malt, yeast, spice, coriander seed, white peppercorn, hay and a good dose of light a.a. hops. Medium-bodied; Great complex flavour of yeast first with banana and bread coming through then immediately fading to a sublime hoppy taste with some grass and herbal flavours most striking and a good malt balance. Aftertaste is quite complex with different flavours and profiles running in different directions. Overall, a very nice beer with a great flavour and even better complexity - definitely worth trying! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle given to me by my brother-in-law, sampled at home in Washington on 16-December-2011.

Whole lemon, funk, and grass nose, quite strong. Clear amber, medium head, fizzy. Whole lemon flavor initially. Funkier at midpalate. Finishes with bready malt and lemon peel. Grassy accents throughout. Good transitions. At last, a New Belgium beer that isn’t an huge disappointment. More BPA than what I would call a Belgian IPA, but a tasty attempt that isn’t terribly far off.

Harris Teeter, DC sixer ($8): Pours an orange color with a pretty nice white head. Aroma is grapefruit and yeast. In the aroma, I think that the Belgian ale aspect is more prominent than any of the IPA aspects. In the taste the IPA is a little more prominent, but not by that much. The hops are still kind of those dry subtle Belgian hops. The aftertaste is very much in keeping with this aforementioned character. Good amount of bitterness. Very little sweetness, although there is a grapefruitiness. Nice mouthfeel. A pretty damn good BIPA.

12 oz bottle. Bought at Super 1 in CDA, ID. Pours hazy cantaloupe with a medium off-white head that collapses into a skiff of foam; nice lacework. Aroma is papery, peppery, clovey--gotta love that Belgian yeast. I’m also getting some floral in there after it warms up a bit. Taste is sweet and meaty with a dry bitter finish. Crisp, clean, refreshing. Highly carbonated, medium-bodied. I like it.
