Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of St. Fun. Pours a cloudy brown with a small off-white yellowish head. Lots of burned caramel, somewhat oxidized with licorice and subdued hops in the nose. Solid body, low in carbonation, spicy, manure, nuts, overripe fruit, pepper and caramel. Again fairly oxidized. Subdued hoppiness - but definitely there’s some hops there. 241010

On tap at Capital Ale House - Downtown on 08/18/2010. Clear dark amber body with a medium creamy light tan head. Big citrus and resiny hop aroma with light caramel. Sweet citrus and resiny hop flavor with lots of caramel and very faint yeast notes. Full body with moderate carbonation. No bourbon or wood character that I could find.

750ml from 2007 pours a translucent, caramel amber with hardly any beige head. Aroma is raisins, leather, caramel, a little salty, almost like smelling a Virginia Ham, some sherry, some light coconut. Flavor is a big letdown next to the aroma, sweet, caramel, malts, cookie dough, light raisins, pears. Finish is watery. The flavor has completely faded after 3 years.

Served on draft at Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a lightly hazy copper color with a medium head. Good head retention and lacing. Hoppy citrus hop aroma with caramel and toffee. Taste is leafy and slightly vegetal hops with a caramel backbone and some unexpected fruity notes, including pear, peach and melon. Medium bodied. Alcohol hidden well. Not the best barleywine.

Acquired via a sweet-ass trade with moejuck. That guy ROCKS! Pours brilliant clear deep copper with thin off white head. The aroma is bright with cherries, raisins, figs, prunes and sweet cherry hard candy followed by just a hint of alcohol heat on the nose. The taste is chewy sweet goodness with cherries, prunes, raisins and some figs pushing over the palate. Behind the rich fruity assault is a thick viscous layer of sweetness accented by mild malts. This is rich sweet goodness. Very tasty English style barleywine. Should be even better with a year or more on it.

12 oz bottled December 2006, courtesy of Secret Santa. Pour is ruby brown with a 1/2 inch dirty off white head. Head really stuck to the sides of the glass. Aroma is sweet malt, hint of oak and alcohol. Taste is caramel sweetness, with the oak (which has almost a smoky characteristic) and some nuttiness. There is a nice hop bitter finish, which then reveals some heat in the after taste that lingers. This was a nice Barley Wine that no doubt would improve.

January 2002 bottle. DAMN! This is almost 3 years old and I just got the bottle. I didnt even realize the date when I first looked at this bottle. Thought I was going to have to age this one for a while, so this is a very pleasant surprise. Thanks a ton Jay (springslicker) this is an awesome bonus!! Immediately upon opening, a burst of aroma rushes up to greet me! Wow, this is one intense aroma. Huge amounts of the good stuff; roasted barley, toffee, sweet candied fruits, an earthy, yet sweet, rich malt base that you can inhale deeply. This is what a good barleywine should smell like. No bitter hops, no citrus, awesome!!! Transluscent body, low filtration evident! Deep cherry red, auburn and dark orange with a small but firm, creamy off-white/beige head. Lacing as well. Oh wow. Flavor delivers!!! You’ve got a mix of dry, roastiness with plenty of English toffee. I think English toffee may be my favorite flavor in barleywines, and this has lots of it. It’s dry, grainy, slightly vinous, and just full of flavor. Light chocolate, raisins, figs, plums and a HUGE yeast apparency. Earthy, dusty yeastiness abounds. Reminds me much of Kuhnhenn’s Fourth Dementia Old ale. Hint of saltiness, some alcohol notes bounce around on the palate. The alcohol get a bit too pervasive on the finish, but that is one of the only complaints I have here. Dry, earthy, woody flavor. NO HOPS!!!!! Wow, I love it when you don’t even feel the hops. This is about as British as it gets for an American brewed barleywine. Fantastic stuff and perfectly aged. Mostly smooth body, with some traces of tingly carbonation. Medium-full body with slight thinning on the end (oxidation). Where has this beer been all of my life??? Next question, how do I get a case of this!!! Thanks so much Jay, this was phenomenal.

3 year old bottle given to me by the brewer. Deep chestnut brown with ruby highlights under a small, but for a Barleywine, good head. Rich complex aroma of caramel malt, dried fruits, and alcohol. Smooth, warming, sweet and fruity. Well balanced. Better than average commercial Barleywine.
