The brewery’s eponymous former Champion Beer of Britain. A dark, strong and bitter beer that defies classification. The beer boasts a complex malt flavour from the use of Crystal and Chocolate malts.

Cask at Hairy Twat beer festival ... WOW this was the star of the show... i expected a bitter from its "original" name ... so its colour was a suprise ... deep dark brown ...roast malts nose ... very soft light fruit malts ... little caramel ... little chocolate ... wondefull balance ... packed full of flavour... A must have again beer.

Cask, Jan Primus. Clear ruby red color, short (though large for English beer) off-white head. Rich malty aroma, caramel, slight roasted, bit earthy and fruity as well. Fruity and bitter taste, hint of caramel. Oily texture. Very nice after a hard day of work.

Cask. Deep rubyish brown colour with mediumsized beige head, that lasts for quite a while and leaving nice lace. Aroma is bready malts along with some roast, mild wooden and fruity notes with some earthyness too. Flavour is chocolate, nuts, some spices along with some sour wet wooden notes.

Cask at Oxford Beer Festival 11-10-07 Pours dark chesnut in colour with a white soft bubbly head. Dark fruits on the nose, and lovely and fruity in the flavour with the merest hint of sourness at the edge, after about half way through my pint I got some milk chocolate as well which surprised me. Have to say that this was a jolly good beer and one that I would definitely seek out again.

Cask-conditioned at the Cornubia, Bristol 17/07/07. Dark brown with a slight off-white head. Aroma of subdued dark fruits with a touch of roasted grain. Easy drinking with a flavour of caramel and a dry finish. Competent but forgettable.

Cask Black beer with a small cream-coloured head. Very subdued nose, little bit of ink... Ink again in the taste, going into walnut peel, charcoal, burnt grains. Dry, little sweetness, except for the very finish. Medium bodied, bit of wheat-like slichkness. Aftertaste has some distinct dryness. OK stout, nothing special. Cask does not do the same thing to stout as to bitter, compared to a (good) bottled version, IMO.

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 25 Nov) Dark brown, almost black, with pale brown head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of coffee and wild berries. Malty, roasted taste with distinct coffee notes, bluberries, blackberries and a lovely deep bitterness in the finish. Complex, but with perfect balance between malt, fruit and hops. Absolutely brilliant.

Gravity at Red Lion, Snargate. Ruby coloured, raisiny fruit some coffee. Very rich and very smooth, but very good balance overall. Hedgerow black fruits add a slight sweetness. Odd but I could drink a couple quite easily 3.4/5 Re-rate cask handpull at The Bull, Horton Kirby, Kent. Deep brown, lasting beige head. I’m not a real fan of this beer, but this is the best I’ve had it. Toasty, roasty, even some dark plum fruit, then some dry malt/fruit and hop on the finish. Really very good. Some good choc. Oddly enjoyable. Just more flavours and textures than I’ve had before with this beer.

[Cask at The Evening Star, Brighton] A deep red almost opaque beer with a small chocolate brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of caramel and roasted bread. The flavor is sweet malty and again with notes of caramel and roasted bread, but the body is a little thin.
