Cask at Red Lion - Wheelton. Light malt, herbal, buttery & stone fruit tastes with a tangy citrus finish. Nice one.

(Bottle conditioned). A new favourite of mine - and I was the first one to rate it on RB, even! (It had been in the database for quite a while. Btw, cask conditioned this beer is called "Magnificat", otherwise it's the same brew.) I had this wonderful bottle conditioned beer under the vaulted ceiling of Durham Cathedral and Cloister Restaurant, where it rightly belongs. The commercial description seems pretty accurate, but this beer may have more in common (strength, yeastiness) with some belgian ales than most British IPAs. Durham Brewery is not much more than 10 years old, but this rich and full flavoured beer would be worthy of St. Cuthbert himself (he died 687 AD, btw). Colour is golden and hazy, carbonation (natural) is low to moderate. If one needs a textbook example of the fact that beer is made of the three elements malts, yeast and hops (+ water, of course), and that each of those three elements should be clearly discernible in aroma and flavour - well, here it is. To quote the brewery: "Despite being strong, this beer is not too sweet, but has a luscious malty base over which a complex bitterness makes balancing, thirst quenching properties." Amen!

Bottle thanks to allmvinyl. Appearance - deep golden. Proportionate white head. Nose - fudge and slightly cakey. Taste - again, cake and fudge, perhaps some dried orange too. Palate - medium bodied, sweet middle but in proportion to the richness of the body. Overall - quite liked this even though the notes are a little simple.

Bottle at home – Christmas present from my nephew Hmm. My bottle says it’s an IPA not an “English Ale” – and that is what it tastes like. Untappd seems to think the two beers are the same so an placing my review here. Pours a clear mid golden amber, with a strong (but not too strong) white head. Nose is slightly hoppy with some musty sourness. Taste is definitely dominated by the hops ! Underneath lie bitter oranges and lemongrass, which dominate in the finish. Very little carbonation, but good lacing. Not quite the sort of beer I normally go for, but very nice indeed. Dangerously drinkable – doesn’t taste like 6.5% !

From bottle at Cardinal 05.02.16. Best before April 2015. Slightly hazy golden. Dense and persistent beige head and lacing. Moderate aroma and taste of pale malt, bitter citrus, papaya, other tropical fruits and dried fruits. Bitterness and Sevilla oranges in taste. Slightly metallic. Round mouthfeel. Good drinkability.

Bottle from Great Grog. Clear golden body with a thin white head. No visible carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of earth, pear and grass. Flavour of marmalade, peppery hops and dusty malts. Medium body with a light, oily texture. Soft fizz. A solid IPA.

Bottle. Mitchell’s Wines, Sheffield. Gold, with a little haze. Film of sticky, white head. Nose has orange hop. Vanilla malts. Flora. Some grassy notes. Hint of peppery spice. Taste is fruity, spicy bitter. Quite zesty and pithy. Some stickiness. Soft, oily palate. Light fizz. Finishes fruity, spicy bitter. Old school. Nice one.
