We brewed this ale only with the famous sake yeast No. 7 from Masumi Sake in Nagano, Japan. On advice from Masumi’s master brewers we fermented this ale very slowly at low temperatures to bring out No. 7’s fabulously fruity character. This is a beer, but has some flavors found in a sake. A great combination!

250ml Bottle - Amber with a small head. Fruity and slightly vinous aroma with hints of caramel, dried fruit and malt. Warming and alcoholic taste with notes of dried fruit, caramel and spicy malt. Am slightly disappointed with this one, but it might be because it was rather expensive!

My 800th rating. 25cl bottle @Maltainen Riekko. Poured clear amber color with no head. Very sweet aroma with loads of alcohol and some herbs. Flavor is mostly alcohol, yeast and some fruitiness. Sticky sweet finish. Not really my kinda beer, as it is way too sweet for me. One of the strongest beer so far I have tasted.

Pours hazy amber into a snifter. Bright white head recedes to mottle surface. Sweet rice cake aromas. Thick, hot and fruity upfront with an underlying sake middle and lasting bitter pith finish.

Clear amber with an off-white head. Aroma is extremely sweet, fruity, malty, very perfumy and loads of alcohol. Flavor is extremely sweet and moderate bitter. The alcohol gives a warming a light burning sensation. Much too sweet and far too much alcohol. More interesting than good. I’ve never tried sake, so I can’t tell how much the yeast influences this beer. Both the label and the box looked fantastic, but in the end that doesn’t count. 020211

250ml bottle. Slightly dim, dark orange with a collapsing foamy off-white head. Strong aroma of ripe fruit, brown sugar, Madeira alcoholic and some yeast. Really sweet and quite bitter flavor, mild malt, caramel, ripe fruit, also hint of peaches, candy sugar and lots of warming alcohol. Aftertaste is sweet, bitter and alcoholic in some kind of balance. Some elements from wood, almost like red wine or sherry barreling without the vanilla. Complex and unusually, but one bottle feels enough for one person. I beer for sipping. Interesting and fun to taste, I think I will but away another bottle in the cellar for some years.

Bottle. Bright orange amber, tiny off white head. Aroma of caramel. Taste is sickeningly sweet and syrupy butterscotch, with candied caramel. Way over the top. Makes me want to give away my bottle of Sweet Horizon.

It is celebration time again. After two months of darkness, the sun has returned to Arctic Norway and that means, of course, party time. For this special occasion I picked a 250ml bottle of Red Horizon that I ordered from Bestillingsutvalget, Vinmonopolet. It comes wrapped in paper in a red box, and poured a clear amber body in the direction of orange. Tiny, off-white head at the top. Fine blend of fresh and dried fruits to the nose. More dried fruits in flavour, apricot and plums, added by hints of dark spices with a cellar touch to it. Lingering aftertaste of bitter, dried fruit with alcohol. Still very much on the sweet side. One small bottle was enough at the time (sun turn in Tromsø, 22.01.2011).

Bottle. Poured a clear apricot with a white head that dissipated completely. Aroma had a sweet grain note with some light fruit and floral notes as well as sake yeast. Flavor was sweet with grains, bread and biscuits. There was an underlying note of sake yeast, flora and fruits. Definitely got better as it warmed.
