Spicy and Bold, a big Christmas cookie of a beer.

Samuel Adams® Old Fezziwig® Ale is the Christmas cookie of beer. Bursting with spices of the season and a remarkably full body, it helps those long winter nights pass much quicker. The full body hits the palate first with a depth of malt character ranging from sweeter toffee and caramel notes to the more dark, roasty chocolate notes. Then come the spices in full force. Cinnamon, ginger and orange peel dance on the tongue bringing with them the celebratory spirit that goes hand in hand with the season.

Part of their "Winter Favorites" 12-pack for winter 2013-14, with the first time seeing their gold labels. Cola-looking with a frothy beige head, good retention and creamy-soapy lacing. Mild aromas of caramel and darker malts with hints of spices (cloves, cinnamon). The cinnamon appears a little stronger in the taste, but not much else. Maybe a little roasted malt in the aftertaste, but overall, a little too filtered.

Mulling spices at the forefront on this one. Maybe it’s too early in the season, but not real impressed. Interesting taste, but I’d prefer something heavier. Cinnamon, nutmeg, etc. maybe with some Christmas fruitcake it would taste great....

Pours clear reddish amber with a medium beige creamy head that dissipates with good lacing. Aroma is faint with caramel, toffee, orange zest and spice notes. Flavor is the same, quite spicy; cinamon, ginger, nutmeg, toffee. Light sweet, light zesty bitterness, a bit metallic on the far finish. Medium body, bubbly carbonation. Not a bad effort

Dark Reddish Brown, Medium Head, Some Lacing. Medium Body, Sweet Caramel, Some Light Spice Aftertaste, Sweet Creamy Malt Finish. Decent Brew but not exactly what expected from Commercial Description. PR department might have gone a little overboard describing this one with "dancing and celebration BS". Thinner than described. Same goes for taste, it is not bursting your taste buds as sharp as they wish it describing their brew. Overall: Good.

It pours a light tan head, the color of the body is a dark red amber. The smell is wheat, nutmeg & spices. The taste takes those previously mentioned aromatic flavors and adds a bit of a gingerbread kick to it. Some light orange peel comes out a bit. The palate is light to medium, a good amount of carbonation helps the crispness and drinkability. Overall, this is basically a pretty good winter warmer that I would come back to.

12 ounce bottle into perfect pint glass, best before May 2013. Pours crystal clear reddish brown color with a nice 2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a nice amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, toast, toffee, ginger, cinnamon, citrus peel, chocolate, nutmeg, brown sugar, dark bread, light roasted malt, and light grassy hops. Damn nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of malt/spice notes. Taste of toffee, caramel, toast, brown sugar, cinnamon, milk chocolate, ginger, light citrus peel, raisin, dark bread, and grassy hops. Lingering notes of toffee, caramel, toast, brown sugar, raisin, chocolate, dark bread, cinnamon, ginger, and light herbal on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice flavor balance with good complexity; with great robustness and balance of malt/spice flavors; and nearly zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very creamy and fairly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very nice Christmas beer! Nice flavor balance with big robustness; and very smooth to drink. This was a very enjoyable offering.

This review was imported from my RateBeer ratings.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a dark amber with a frothy, light-tan head. Aroma of caramel, spices, and ginger. Has a sweet taste with flavors of cinnamon and ginger. Medium-bodied with a slick texture and average carbonation. Finish is long and has a bit of a metallic tinge to it.

It’s an okay holiday beer that I would drink again, but there are others that I like much better.

Bottle. Nutty toasty malt aroma with some very light spice notes. Chestnut with a moderate beige head. Nutty toasted bread, lightly bitter clove-like flavor with a roasty finish. Medium body and carbonation. Pretty much a lightly spiced brown ale.
