Spicy and Bold, a big Christmas cookie of a beer.
Samuel Adams® Old Fezziwig® Ale is the Christmas cookie of beer. Bursting with spices of the season and a remarkably full body, it helps those long winter nights pass much quicker. The full body hits the palate first with a depth of malt character ranging from sweeter toffee and caramel notes to the more dark, roasty chocolate notes. Then come the spices in full force. Cinnamon, ginger and orange peel dance on the tongue bringing with them the celebratory spirit that goes hand in hand with the season.

Bottle: Poured a brown color ale with a relatively large foamy head with OK retention and some light lacing. Aroma of caramel malt with light toffee and nutmeg notes is pretty enticing. Taste is a good mix between some solid caramel malt with light notes of nutmeg and balanced residual sugar in the aftertaste. Body is about average with good carbonation. Easily drinkable while retaining some good complexity.

Refrigerated bottle from JStax. Pours translucent medium brown with ruby hightlights and small off-white head. Medium lacing, light body, medium/light carbonation, and caramel aroma. Taste is roasted malt, herbal spice (mostly ginger), hint of cinnamon, and long spice finish. I prefer Great Lakes Christmas Ale. Better as it warms.

12oz bottle from Pick’s poured into a shaker pours a dark brown with a ruby hue and about a half finger of white head. Aroma of chocolate, cinnamon and citrus. Taste is light bitter. Same as above with the addition of some pine hops. Medium bodied with a creamy texture. Lively carbonation and a long bitter finish. Overall, very good. This is probably my favorite Sammy beer.

Bottle from Winter 2011 sampler. I’ve had this a few times before, but not, I guess, since I started on RateBeer. Chestnut brown pour out of the bottle, kicks up a frothy brown head in my Sam Adams glass. Kind of a mild spicy note that doesn’t speak of anything specific, but at least it’s closer to a wassail than pumpkin pie spice. Taste does start with the orange peel, and the rest of the claimed spices slip in as I go on. Nut brown malt body is slightly overmatched.by the spice, even it leaves some sticky traces on my lip. Nice, but needs to tip in a bit more malt and hops.

Bottle sample at a tasting. Thanks Oren. Clear deep amber color with an off-white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, honey, some fruitiness and sweet spices. Sweet flavor with malt, caramel, fruits, ginger, cinnamon and a slightly drier finish. Medium-bodied.

A giant sugar cookie with gingerbread icing. This bottle should send hopheads fleeing, but for us saner folk, it proves quite the indulgent winter brew, good for a night spent pondering heavy snow in Charleston, SC. Sweet and easy, a gentle malt-n-spice beer that brings on cinnamon and ginger without overtaking the caramel heart of the brew. And a reasonable ABV means you can warm your winter more than once or twice. Worth the rest of the Sam Adams winter mix pack detritus. (1/20/09)

Bottle in the Rake. Clear red - brown beer. Smooth and slightly soft palate but with some prickly carbonation. Smooth malt with mild ginger and subtle underlying fruit. Finishes sweeter and softer. Nice siced beer - not all overdone.

Bottled, thanks Bierkrug! Clear mahogany colour, minimal head. Aroma of cranberry and nutmeg. Dryish with medium body and clean mouthfeel. Salty spicy finish. Some interesting spicyness, but rather shallow character.
