The ale started out in 1996 as a winter-only brew. However, the rich malty character and well-balanced hop aroma proved so popular, we decided to make it available all year round.

Creamy, full-bodied and smooth, Blaven is also somewhat deceptive – the strongest of our regular ales.

Hops: Challenger, Galena
Malts: Pale Ale, Crystal

Bottle at home in Hackney - cheers to the Nellzer for hauling back to London from the North. Pours totally clear burnished gold with a frothy, mostly white head. Reasonably well rounded, with bready malts, a touch of butter, bitter grass and sun-kissed hay, undertones of ripe citrus fruits. Light bodied, a little oily, with fine carbonation. Finishes with bready malts, some dough, mellow grassy bitterness, orange peel. A fairly basic ale, but entirely drinkable, to be fair.

Bottle. Clear golden beer, thick white head. Very light aroma of grassy hop. Tastes of citrus, apple, a bit of caramel and malt. Not a strong taste but crisp and refreshing. Light, airy aftertaste with a bit of biscuit. Not great but not bad.

500ml bottle. Clear and golden with an average white head. Floral, yeasty aroma, flavour is similar with some citrus. Dry and rather pleasant.

Cask at the Moorings, Aberdeen. It pours golden yellow, with a thin foamy white head. The nose is sweet sultana, raisin, marmalade and Braeburn apple. The taste is hay, straw, citrus pith, honey sweetness and marmalade, with a decent bitter finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Ok.

50cl bottle, thanks to Lewis. Pours hazy golden-orange with a thin white layer of lace. The nose has sultana and maybe oranges against a gently malty background. The taste has more oranges, with something earthy kicking in at the end. The palate has a big beginning then falls away in the middle section. The finish is bitter and quite long. Overall, a decent bitter.
