Created by the brewery’s founder, Quilter’s Irish Death is The Iron Horse Brewery Flagship Beer. The color of this beer belies its drinkability. We lovingly refer to it as beer candy. Irish Death is loaded with a f#*!-ton of different malts and just enough hop presence for balance. Smooth enough to session, but too strong to do so.

Dark brown color. Rich, heavy and malty with a nice balance of sweetness and dry bitterness. Alcohol taste is similar to barley wine.

Super deep dark brown coloured body with a large four to five centimetre tall off-white and almost tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, light coffee, some oatmeal, a dash of grain and peated malt with a good deal of sweetness from pitted fruits and raisins towards the end. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong rich malty and oatmeal flavours dominate with a ton of bitterness from the grain and light coffee notes with some lactose and creamy notes, but it all ends with a lot of sweetness from caramelised sugars and pitted fruits. Aftertaste shows some oatmeal and more deep malts with some rye even in the mix and a lot of creamy, milky and sweet notes at the end that gives the beer some nice complexity, especially on the sweet side of things. Overall, a good and deep beer that shows well and has robust flavours throughout with a more pronounced creamy, oatmeal and especially sweet flavour than anything else. Good to try and not a bad option! I sampled this 65 cL bottle, purchased from Super One Foods in Kalispell, Montana on 28-July-2020 for US$4,49 sampled in my cabin here in Grand Teton National Park in Colter Bay Village on 02-August-2020.

355ml can, Antenna America, Kannai. Pours dark brown with some light brown foam on the top, disappearing fairly quickly. Nose is nutty, some caramel and strong malty base there, lightly spicy. Bitter notes. Taste is caramelly as well, light toasted character with subdued malt sweetness in the background. Bittenress giving an extra edge. Light tartness there. Dry finish with some spices lingering together with bitterness on the tongue even after drink itself is long gone.

Can from Total Wine, Bellevue. Dark brown color when a large, foamy head. Sweet malt, chocolate and caramel, brown sugar, a little dough. Smooth, somewhat sticky mouthfeel. It's a little too sweet, but I rather like it.

On tap. Pours a clear red-brown with a medium, creamy, long lasting, tan head that laces. Sweet aroma of roasted malt, caramel, dark chocolate, dried fruit and vanilla. Sweet flavour of roasted malt, caramel, dark chocolate, dried fruit, licorice and vanilla with a dry, light boozy finish. Medium body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Tasty.

12 oz. can from Withey's Health Foods in Kalispell, MT. Pours a dark brown-black color with a small beige head and fair retention. No lacing. Dark malt aroma. Very bourbon-like booze-forward flavor with some dark malts and chocolate notes in the finish. Thin mouthfeel. Limited bitterness. Light carbonation. It tastes better as you mouth numbs, but just too boozy overall. More of a strong dark ale versus a sweet stout.
