Honey Blonde is a light and refreshing blonde/golden ale, with subtle hints of honey and softly sweet malt.

A golden straw coloured bitter. A superb blend of spicy and floral hops, added to the smooth sweetness imparted by Flaked Maize and wild flower honey, make this a beer that never hangs around for long!

Also named Downton Chimera Honey Blonde.

Cask at the Castle Tap, Reading. Startling vivid gold colour with a thick white head- it’s really quite a looker! Unfortunately though it’s a mixture of honey and beer. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of both honey and beer when taken separately, but to my palette at least they rarely seem to work together. In this case there’s a big hit of sweet pure set honey up front. Nice honey actually, I quite fancy that on a slice of bread. However, Downton have instead shoved it in a beer. The honey dominates throughout (leaving a rather sticky mouthfeel) but there is a grassy hop bitterness in the tail end which, as usual, clashes with the honey rather than complimenting or balancing it. So, I continue to be unconvinced by honey beers.

Bottle from Bernie’s Off License, Solihull. Poured a crystal clear straw colour with a frothy white head and lots of broken lace. The aroma is yeast, light malt. The flavour is moderate bitter with a dry light earthy mineral hop palate. Light bodied with average carbonation.

50cl bottle from the Home Brew Shop, Aldershot. Unfortunately I didn’t read Druncan’s review before opening this, because it behaved exactly as he described. Still I managed to get most of it into a pint glass in the end.

The end result is pale straw in colour with a billowing brilliant white head; there’s a light musky, grainy aroma; it’s rather thinly bodied with a mix of citrus, honey and herbal flavours; and a clean, crisp, grassy finish. Rather good.

(Cask at Priory Arms, Stockwell, London, 7 Aug 2010) Pale golden colour with brief, white head. Fruity, slightly malty nose with citrus and honey. Fruity, floral taste with notes of citrus and honey. Light body, fairly sweet with low bitterness. Definitely drinkable but hardly exciting.
