500ml bottle from the excellent Bottle Shop, Canterbury. Hazy brown beer with thick big beige head. The hops burst out of the bottle and glass even before I got anywhere near it. Earthy grapefruit with a touch of orange and satsuma fruits. Has a definite feel of a Belgian yeast on this I thought. An old ale? Not sure on that description. An English Strong Ale is what I would have had it down as. Good carbonation in the mouth. It has a noble type of strength to it, a syrupyness on the malts that is well balanced by the carbonation, mouthfeel, fullness and most of all by the hops which keep everything in check. Amazingly well balanced beer. Yeast with slight esters is definitely present. It’s a classic orange fruit, hoppy, yeasty English Strong Ale. Love it.

Bottle picked up at Bellingers, Jet Garage, Grove, Nr Wantage, Oxon, consumed 25-02-10 This explained out of the bottle, I suppose that’ll teach me for not waiting for it to settle. I lost over half a bottle as an impressive Vesuvius like eruption continued to take place. The beer when it finally settled was a hazy brown, again another casualty of my pour was the appearance of the beer. Sweet nose, touch cloying. The taste was also sweet and in my opinion overly spicy, there is a hoppiness trying to show through but again its drowned out by the spice. Not the best beer from Durham but in fairness I didn’t help matters. A5 A3 F6 P3 Ov11 2.8

(Cask at White Horse, Parson’s Green, London, 27 Nov 2009) Reddish amber colour with brief, off-white head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of dried fruit, caramel, treacle and brown sugar. Malty, fruity taste with dried fruit, apricots, caramel and some earthy hops in the finish. Full body, fairly sweet. Rather vinous with a warming puff of alcohol. Nice and warming for a dark november evening.

Bottle, Beer Ritz, Leeds. Poured a dark amber colour with minimal head. Aroma was dark fruit and caramel malt. Flavour had traces of spice and a nice rounded fruitiness. Not the best from Durham, but far from shabby.
