Had this at the 2011 Pittsburgh Ratebeer Christmas Eve Eve Tasting. I have no idea why beerman6686 let me taste this, he is a glutton for cheapdark punishment. Dude, we were getting ready to leave and then he pops this monster, wew. It was not as viscous looking as I was expecting. When you pour it, it has a very good looking head, one of the darkest I’ve ever seen on a beer, I’m talking rally dark brwn choco moose. Aroma is not overpowering. The saving points for this beer is the appearance and the the aroma. Tasting? Taste is just plain alky roto-tilling impy stout. Big nasty flavors are destoying my taste buds like the front of a Kiss Destoyer album cover. Over the top and down the sides of my tongue goes nasty nellie. Some burn in there. Rude and nasty, perfectly on style, heheh. Nagging finish like an old mate who has worn out her welcome. Wew, same with finish, wew. Dan you are so rude to leave me with this taste in my mouth all the way back home to beaver county. You got it coming.

2009 bottle. Pours black. Brown head. Cedar chips and cigar box notes immediately hit the nose followed by more subtle vanilla, roasted chocolate malts and coffee beans. Taste is the same. The cedar is really up front and adds an initial level of spiciness to the stout. The cedar aging seems to give the stout a much lighter feel than the other treatments.

RBESG 2010, Grand Tasting, bottle
Black oil color; the darkest brown head ever seen. Aroma of roasted malt, very peppery, leathery too. Strong roasted malt and liquorice flavor, strong body, the mouthfeel is a bit oily; peppery, with black coffee too. The final is strong but less bold than expected; too much roasted malt and coffee. Very good, original, not impressive.

750 mL bottle courtesy of TheCheeseMan and shared at the 12th Richmond Ratebeer Gathering on 9/18/10. Pours a red tinted brown with a large brown head. Good head retention and lacing. Big cedar notes in the aroma with lightly roasted malts and faint smoke. The taste is big wood note, anise, pepper, caramel, roasted malts. Slightly vegetal. Medium-full bodied. Quite different from the base beer and unfortunately the wood detracts a lot.

From dkachur @ 12th Richmond Gathering: Cedar, black pepper, and chicory nose with a smoky bacon quality. Black with a medium brown head, viscous pour. Black pepper, cedar, and chocolate syrup flavor. Very interesting, A delightful sipper.

Pitch black with a large dark beige head. Spicy aroma with burned malt and coffee. Flavour had burned malt, coffee and liquerice. Finished dry and burned. Not bad.

My first ever Cigar City, tasted at RBESG 2010. Talk about having expectations! Pitch black with a big and lasting brown head. So far so awesome. Dark chocolate and licorice aromas mixed with floral, spicy and herbal notes, some of it easy to attribute to cedar. Sweetish dark and roasted flavour, with ash and charcoal, some spice and herbs and some wood. Huge mouthfeel, getting a bit cloying not unlike a dark lord.

Bottle at ChrisO "I’m Trying to see the Stool" pre GBBF2010 tasting. OK, this wasn’t intentional but I seem to have given this beer the lowest score. Black with a thin tan head. Too much cedar for me. It even flirts into Palma violets on the finish. I mean there just isn’t enough of the base beer coming through, so it’s completely out of balance. I guess I just don’t like cigar boxes. Sorry Ken. But thanks for bringing it.

Bottled@The Chriso rock the roof down pre-GBBF tasting. Quite much pitch black colour with small beigeish brown head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, some mild wooden notes as well as alcohol, syrup and quite much liquorice. Flavour is quite much the same along with some nice roasted notes and mild tarry notes. A very pleasant Imperial Stout.
