Bottle bought whilst on a visit to Somerset. Poured mid to dark brown with an average sized off-white head. Aroma of malt, chocolate, vanilla, lightly nutty and nicely roasted. Medium sweetness, moderate bitterness. Medium body, slightly oily texture, soft carbonation. Best of the Cotleigh beers I've had.

Bottle from Sidmouth Wines, Sidmouth. Clear, extremely dark red ale with no head. It’s a steady porter that’s easy-sipping without a stated character. It’s pleasant with extremely tight roasted malts in both aroma and taste, hints of liquorice that provide a small sweetness and a small smoothness for its texture.

Bottle at home in London - sourced from Ales by Males. Pours mostly clear, rich brown with a monstrous, frothy khaki head. The nose holds toasted malts, light caramel, hints of earth and dried berries. Light-medium sweet flavour, subtle touches of oxidation, dusty caramel, dried out milk chocolate, leathery berries, toasted leaves, earth. Light bodied with lively carbonation and massaging texture. Pretty well balanced, with faint peppery burnt wood, more mellow cocoa, bitter earth, dried fruits. An easygoing, low-octane porter.

50cl bottle. Poured dark brown, very thick, foamy beige head. Blackcurrant hits my nose at first, followed by sweet malty and roasty notes. Flavor is quite much the same, finishes very dry. Not a porter for my taste. Too sweet and the berries didn´t fit in there.

500ml bottle. Clear dark ruby red colour with huge, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, beige head. Fruity aroma has notes of red and dark berries, a dry touch of fruit parings. Taste is initially minimally sourish fruity, red and dark berries, later with subtle undertones of milk chocolate and a nuttily touch, minimally salty liquorice overtones . Relatively light.

Half-pint of the newer 5% ABV version: hand-pulled in the Cock Hotel, Wellington, Shropshire on 18th Nov 2012. I know Cotleigh have a bit of a name for brewing loads of boring ’samey’ beers, but this is different and good. Almost black in appearance: good head of foaming biege coloured bubbles sat on top and refused to leave. Roasted almost burnt maltiness to the smell and taste: this in turn suggested dark chocolate, coffee and liquorice flavours to my nose and throat. Full bodied and fairly creamy and rich, obviously well looked after in the celler, this was in good condition. I would have had another but I was on a Sunday afternoon mission and had to visit other pubs before nightfall, pity.
