During the fermentation of the first batch of this Abbey-style dubbel, the yeast «died» and was «resurrected» by brewer Chris Cashell. This beer is not unlike those that certain Belgian monks have been brewing since the 16th century. Made with five types of barley malt and lots of sugar, this beer is quite strong and flavorful, without being too sweet.

Rich, very hazy amber coloured body with a copper glow and a nice, three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of malt, grain, caramel, light citrus hops, some raisins and a touch of apples - nice and relatively sweet smelling without any perceived yeast or pungency. Medium-bodied; Assertive hop flavour of citrus and light pine with a touch of honey right behind and a relatively strong malt flavour with grain and rye coming through. Aftertaste doesn’t show much body at all, no yeast and only a dry hop character with a touch of grain. Overall, a very interesting beer for the style - not like a typical dubbel at all, but not a bad beer - just different - more hops, less body, no yeast and a grain flavour make this decidedly american, so does the can! I sampled this twelve ounce can (I like having traditionally belgian styles in cans) purchased from Whole Foods in Washington (Foggy Bottom, I St), DC on 04-April-2014 for US$2,49 sampled at home in Washington on 09-September-2014.

A little bit of a wooden tinny taste to this one. Some sense of barrel. Pours brownish red with ok head and lacing. Finishes with some light sweetness and a little astringency. Can at American Ice.

Location: 12 oz can from State Line, 2/8/13

Aroma: The nose is sweet malts, yeast, caramel, brown sugar, some spice, and a little hop
Appearance: It pours a dark reddish-orange color with a small beige head and some light, drippy lace
Flavor: The flavor is malty and yeasty with some clear spice notes, and a bit of hop bitterness
Palate: The body is medium, with too much carbonation, and a somewhat poor mouthfeel
Overall Impression: Any Abbey Dubbel in a can? You don't see that too often, but I like it. As for the beer, it is fine, but I wasn't too happy with it to be honest. This one just feels a little off overall.

Tap at Max’s Taphouse, Baltimore - 22/05/12. Hazy orange/brown pour with a small off-white head. Malty nose, Belgian style yeasts, mixed fruits largely dark. Sweet candy sugars in the taste, dark berry fruits, yeast and grain. Medium bodied, crisp finish.

12 ounce can. Pours a hazy deep reddish copper color. Medium sized buubly beige head. Mild bready malt nose. Some herbal hops and wood. Dryish bittersweet malt flavor upfront. Bitter chocolate burnt sugar flavor. Lacks depth or complexity. Too bitter to compare in style to a belgian dubbel. Disappointing.

Big Top, Roslyn, PA case: Purchased a case for this to go to a music festival where cans are not allowed. I thought it would be lighter, but alas, the color is ruby red with a thin head. Aroma is yeast, a hint of hops, and a fruity undertone. Taste is somewhat sweet. Finish has a whole bunch of dry hops that linger into the aftertaste. This was not the perfect beer to session from a can at a music festival, but, now, a few days later, it is quite nice to drink it from a snifter.
