Draft at the source. Solid dark brown with hints of garnet at the edges. Earthy chocolate maltiness as a base offset with a pretty hefty dose of smoky ham or bacon. It works pretty well but a bit too smoky for my tastes.

Served in a snifter at the brewpub, 1-19-2013. Lager glass shows a deep brown nearly black color. Thin tan head down the glass. Nose is lightly smoky with nice roasted malts. Flavor is much the same with a very light grassy hop. Lighter in body with a charred malt texture. Nothing wrong with this beer, I just am not a fan of smoked brews.

Cask at GBBF. Opaque very dark brown beer. Rich spicy malt with just a light touch of smoke. A little repressed hoppyness at the finish. Tasty and well joined up.

Cask at GBBF. Black with a small tan head. Rather weak aroma with fruit, bacon smoke, and some roasted notes. Dryish and very smoked flavour with licorice notes.

Poured from gravity cask into one-third pint glass. Wholesome pitch black body under a naked surface. Smoked, sweet malty to the nose added by grassy hops. Dark fruits in flavour quite well balanced with smoked malts leading to a hoppy bitter ending. Not enough bodied, a bit diluted, but still a joy to the palate (GBBF, 05.08.2009).
