Markedly different from modern beers, 1503 is deep chestnut red, lightly hopped, yet full of chocolate, coffee and malt complexities. Whilst it is thoroughly enjoyable drunk unaccompanied, keen cooks will appreciate its dark and treacly richness in a hearty beef stew, or celebratory fruit cake.

Bottle, Waitrose. Muddy ugly brown. The aroma hints at an oaty, chocolatey, slightly nutty and bready character. A different brew.

Bottle 50cl.Clear medium amber color with a average, creamy, good lacing, fully lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, nutty, light chocolate, moderate yeasty, soap, first inmpression was bad but as I drink more of the beer it turns better and better. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and dusty chocolate coffee bitter with a long average duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20090730]

Bottled@ChrisO. Reddish amber colour, huge beige head, some lace. Aroma is spices, wood, some earth, liquorice and mild earthyness. Flavour is liquorice, roasted malts, quite big on the grass and spices. Grassy and liquoriceish finish along with some very dark chocolate. Brutally kicking and different. Also quite much nuttyness.

Bottle at Toms Ultimate Glasgow Tasting: Poured a reddish brown with an off white head. The aroma is a pungent floral with some hops. The taste seemed metallic with hops and wood finish.

BCA from Bristol Slow Food Market. Dark brown in colour with red undertones and a big, tan lacy head. Aroma of dark fruit, plain chocolate and roasted malt. The flavour was rich and sweetish, with a long malty finish. Different and very enjoyable.
