’03 Bottle Pours a hazy golden/redish amber with a medium off-white head that leaves coarse spotty lacing. Aroma is of cirtus, apricot, mild malts, old oak, and a little alcohol. Flavor is hopy and fruity. Orange and pineapple. The 10% is not so noticable at first and the relatively high carbonation is lively but not overpowering. Feel is very smooth and finish is pretty easy with a little hopy bite. An easy to drint "big beer" that I’m sure will sneak up on me.

2003 bottling. A hazy, orange-red barleywine with a heavy emphasis on sweet malts, this beer has a candy-like mouthfeel with brown sugar and caramel interplaying with candied fruits, balanced by grapefruity hops (which remain nicely subtle), a piney finish, and alcohol presence. The rather light aroma offers the same attributes. Not too thick-bodied but still sticky, this would be the perfect accompaniment, in a snifter, to a nice after-dinner cigar. What does Old Boardhead compare to? It reminds me a bit of two Dogfish Head beers- Immort Ale and 120 Minute IPA, without the peat of the former and the very strong hopping/alcohol of the latter. Nice beer.

2002 Vintage-Bottled 22-May-2002 (650 mL bottle): Perfect amber colour with ruby highlights. Thin light tan head with larger bubbles and trillions of tiny bubbles rising from the bottom. Sweet smells of grapes, peaches, cherries, vanilla and oak. Full-bodied; definate alcohol taste. Strong oakiness and fruit taste with hoppiness and subtle maltiness finishing the palate. Overall, a great colour and fantastic smell, but the taste was a bit disapointing because the alcohol dominated the taste. I do reccomend this to everyone though, as it is a pretty good barley wine! I bought this 650 mL bottle from Total Beverage in Thornton (Denver), Colorado.

(2001) Chestnut; brown-yellow head, not very ample. Nose gives preserved fruit (confits), ginger, "Grand Marnier". Some hops seem to struggle to come trough. Taste: sweet-sourish-bitter. WOW! Some balance, some impression. A bit harsh, resiny finish, though. very chewy mouthfeel. Slight alcohol impression, very masked. In the aftertaste, the taste of confited orange or Gr. Marnier (much less sweet) reappears, to stay long. A better-than-average, very American Barley Wine.

2001 version, bottled (at the Rate Beer gathering at Flying Saucer, Addison). Amber couloured. Cork and flower aroma. Very thick with chewy maltiness. This is hop syrup so thick it doesn't make your mouth wet. Flavourful, and rather complex, yet not extremely bitter.

[have had many vintages since, none of which have matched up to the first I had - still really tasty stuff, though] Vintage 1999. Holy crap! I’m in f--kin’ love! This is like Hair of the Dog Fred, but superior in most respects. Burnt orange color, cloudy appearance. Malty sweetness. Roasty notes. Plums, figs, cherries in the finish. Prostrate yourselves and bow down! Aged to near perfection. A great barleywine! Thanks a million brewbandit!

1999 sampled end of 2002. Bright red; richly malty, syrupy aroma...peach, toffee. Still a very syrupy body, with warming malt, peach, pear...alcohol underneath it all. It''s not that I don''t like my barley wines malty (Old Woolly!) but this is a bit much, especially for its age. It should have developed some style by now - it takes more than big flavours to get over with me.

Brewed 11/10/98, Bottled 1999, Sampled October 2002. Intense fruity orangey, apple, and date aromas plus spicy hops. Hazy orange-amber with small fading head. Strong and sweet; fruity with alcohol, smoky and herbal notes. Warming balanced finish. Intoxicating. Low carbonation and quite smooth. Outstanding.
Score based on this sampling. 2003 sampled in 2006: Appealing dark honeyed odor. Medium foaming head, light haze from yeast. Fruity and spicy with persimmon.
