A rich, rare treat. An epic labor of love that will change your notion of what beer can be. Brewed with maple syrup and honey, and aged for three years, its warm toffee notes and round mellow tone are purely stunning. Like candy for the soul.

From Mar 2007

Pours from 12 oz foil wrapped bottle a very dark brown with reddish hues and a small head of foam that disappeared almost immediately.

The smell is wow. Huge notes of cocoa, dark fruit, vanilla, molasses, brandy, caramel, fig...

The taste on first sip is loaded with dark fruit like plum, raisin, fig, black cherry and then... there's the vanilla floating around in the background along with some toffee and maple syrup. Wow. This brew really demands your attention but at the same time says, take your time lest evil befall you... And that's no problem for me because as complex and as tasty as it is, there's *no* denying the prowess it has in the abv department. Damn, I wish it was about 20 below out...just kidding. ;^) I *will* say that I'm not getting an alcohol "burn" but hey, I'm taking very VERY small sips.

Well, I'm going to finish the review before I finish the brew and that's quite unusual for me but, I have to say, of the really huge brews in the +15%abv range that I've tried, this one is the most "drinkable". Well done Bristol Brewing!!

2003 brew date with a 2006 bottling date; this has gone past it's prime. Aroma has quite a bit of alcohol still, but behind that alcohol is notes of soy sauce, cardboard and sherry. There is also a teriyaki beef jerky note to the aroma. There is a hint of a fruity, dark berry note. Lots of alcohol. Pours a very still dark brown, not quite black with no head. Huge legs to this one. Flavor has quite a bit of alcohol, but also huge smoked, barbecue meat notes. Low to moderate bitterness. Some chocolate and coffee notes, but secondary to the alcohol and meat. Obviously no hop flavor. A bit of soy sauce, but the oxidation isn't as bad as in the flavor. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied; it's not as thick as one would expect a beer this large to be. Absolutely no carbonation. Lots of alcohol warmth. Overall this beer is well past it's prime, but has held up better than many other beers would have. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Opaque black beer. Not a lot of carbonation. Chocolate and marmite nose. Light semi dry palate. Taste follows the nose but adds some rich porty tones and some dried fruits. Dry and warming finish with some aniseed and marmite. Nice beer but not the knockout I was hoping for.

2003 bottle at Ft Wayne tasting - Pours very dark brown with minimal head. It has an aroma of dark roast malt and alcohol. The flavor is roast malt with some interesting woody notes. Given the very high abv, it’s not surprising that even after all this time it’s kind of hot. Tasty and full bodied.

Bottle from Liquor Max. Pours a clear ruby brown with a few bubbles. The aroma is really strong. Like burnt malt, tar, overly cooked dark fruit, alcohol. Pretty full in body. Very light carbonation. First flavor is chocolate, then some maple, then some really nasty tar, a burning in the throat, charred caramel. Don’t think there’s oak, but there might be. It’s doing a lot of things. Finishes really dark and pretty bitter, with a slight balancing candy. Not to be missed.
