From Jul 2007

Purchased from Poplar Wine & Spirits in Casper for US$10.50.

Pours from 32oz waxed and sealed swing top bottle (bottled Apr 22 3007) a cloudy deep amber-brown with a smallish head of foam but it sticks around for the entire session and it has some lacing.

The smell is big on the yeast! I'm also getting some sourness and some fruit but the yeast smell is strong and oh.... the sour notes are taking center stage now and I can't wait to take a sip.

The taste is really fruity up front. There's a definite sour flavour that dominates the initial taste but that is offset by some good malty caramel sweetness and it has a lot of earthy tones in the background that become more noticeable as I take further sips. It's an unusual mixture of flavours but I find that it works for *my* taste buds and I find myself taking more and more sips. Pretty drinkable in my book.

Further sips in and the sourness is still there but the malt presence balances out the brew nicely. I think Grand Teton has done a nice job within the style. I'm glad I bought 2 botttles for myself and 1 for a trade to another fan of the Grand Teton's Cellar Reserve series. This one is, imho, another well crafted brew. Thanks Grand Teton!

1L swing top? bottle. Thanks to maniac! March 2014 DC Tasting. Poured a ruby clear color without a real head to speak of. Aroma was malty, sweet notes. Malt finish, some nutty notes. Age has oxidized this a bit (bottle was first opened in Sept), the sour/acid is missing, but was still enjoyable enough.

750ml bottle. Orange-red body, not much head. Creamy malt body, not sour, but definitely has a tang to it. Kind of odd, medium bodied. Reminiscent of a Steam beer in ways, but has the delicate lactic tones. OK at best, not so impressive.

Oud bruins are more Dutch than Belgian, and are sweet, not sour. Not sure if this is a just a play on words for the word Bruin. Definitely sour, medium amber with a skin of beige head and very lazy carbonation. Aroma is grapes/wine, apple cider. Taste is more cider with a malt backbone. Finish is kind of flat. Nice try, but not close.

2013 bottle at Octobachi, Charleston. It pours cloudy red-brown with a small beige head. The nose is red berry, tanginess, mild vinegar, sweet red grape, jam and sour wood. The taste is smooth, dark fruit, dried berry, faint sourness, damp wood, brown sugar and earth with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Perhaps more on the sweet side than sour.... Tasted fine with spicy food, but on its on so-so.
