Bottle. Dark brown with shades of red and a righteous white foamy head. Aroma of (roasted) malts, nuts and caramel. Taste follows aroma plus hints of chocolate, bread and earthy hops. Low bitterness, medium carbonation. Very balanced. A really nice Dunkel. Instant spot on my list of go-to-Dunkels.

0.5 l bottle from ’Biermuda’, best before January 2017. Clear, dark red to brown with a medium large, foamy, stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, slightly grassy and a bit roasty aroma of caramel, nuts, some straw and bread. Sweetish, malty, slightly grassy and a bit roasty taste of caramel, nuts, bread and some straw, followed by a short, slightly roasty, moderately grassy finish. Medium body, smooth and slightly effervescent mouthfeel, average carbonation. Nice!

Pours chestnut in color from the bottle. A creamy head forms which subsides but lingers as whispy lacing. Aroma is roasted malt and dark chocolate. Taste is bitter dark chocolate up front and transitions directly into a strong sourness that carries into and dominates the swill. Despite the occassional floral note the hops do not quite persuade. The necessary bitterness is there but makes a stale almost acrid impression. Despite a promising start this one fails to develop beyond average.

0,5 l long neck bottle with the new clear label art design. A dark red brown with a light tanned head in the glass. Malty nose as expected. Taste starts very roasty malty, some sourness and hop bitterness in the background. Barrelwood in the aftertaste. Like a failed dark IPA. Strange.

Many thanks for this bottle to Erzengel. Clear medium brown amber color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, caramel, nutty.

1l bottle from the brewery. The beer starts malty-smooth. Not too sweetish, nice bittered. Earthy, hints of roast. Nice bitter-dark malty aftertaste, very dry there. Roasted dark bread, still easy to drink due to remaining hints of sweetness. Round and nice!

1000ml bottle. Clear, deep reddish glowing, brown colour, with half-way lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Grainy aroma, hints of toasted dark malt, some hay and husk, cocoa. Taste is dry grainy, minimally tart, cautious hints of dark malt, some husk.

Bottled (from Bierzwerg.de, as Thomansen Export Dunkel, best before was about a year ago...). Deep murky brown colour with a mediumsized beige head that leaves nice lace. Aroma is roasted malts, mild coffee, some caramel and mild toffee. Also mildly ashy notes. Flavour is richly roasted old coffee with some caramel, mild toast and toffee as well. Quite a strange "Dunkel" compared to other German dunkels. But yet a rather pleasant brew.

33cl bottle pours a deep clear copper with gold edges and off white head. The aroma is full with Christmas fruit cake, black licorice and honey laced dark roasted coffee. The taste has the honey or molasses sweetened dark roasted coffee mingling with some spicy black licorice and dark roasted malts. To midway a fairly assertive spicy hop component joins in and helps take this to the finish.
