Bottle at home in Hackney - think I got this from the brewery. Pours black-brown with a surprisingly fleeting head, of beige tone. Incredibly rich beer, lots of gooey chocolate, peat, perhaps some molasses and soy, background roast, honey, burnt toffee. Full bodied, oily and thick and chewy, with fine carbonation. Lightly warming finish, more sticky dark malts, soft peat notes, alcohol, creamy chocolate, more soy and molasses, mellow roast, nips of ashy bitterness. A beer of this intensity without adjuncts seems so quaint these days. But there is character to spare here. If you go in for an over-the-top BA impy stout, which I do, then this kind of beer is a whole lot of fun.

Bottle. No idea where from. In a box with the gooseberry sour beer. Need to clear some beers out of the cellar. Not far off black. No head. Nose has quality dark chocolate. Vanilla. Steeped vine fruit. Leather. Tar. Soy. Taste is sweet, slick, vinous and chocolatey. Some oaky bitterness. Touch more soy. Medium body. Slick and nicely rich and gravy like. Low carbonation. Long, vinous bitter finish. Nice vanilla throughout, though. Probably cracked this the right time.

Opaque dark brown beer, a few dark tan bubbles. Light smooth palate, semi dry, modest fine carbonation. For the style the dark malts are a tad thin but have good flavour. Little dark chocolate liqueur. Well integrated fruity whiskey. Modest spice. Smooth and mildly warming finish. Yeah nice flavour but the palate is quite a let down.
