CXXX Bitter

Brewed exclusively for this JDW beer festival, this comes from a recipe of a beer brewed in 1878, when the Elgood family assumed complete ownership of the brewery, hence the name – celebrating 150 years of family ownership. This well-balanced light brown bitter has a pleasing hop character in both the aroma and finish.

Cask at the Station Hotel, Ipswich. Pours clear light brown with a lasting bubbly off white head. Aroma is well malted, nutty and nice and fruity. Medium sweetness, quite light bitterness. Medium body, slight sticky texture. Soft carbonation, quite dry mouthfeel. Wasn’t too sure to start with but was a grower.

Cask-conditioned at the King of Wessex (JDW), Bath 7/05/09. The festival lingers on in Bath and I was pleased to get to try CXXX. Copper coloured with a very lively head, that was white and tight and left a film of suds down the glass. Slightly sweet to start, with prominent biscuit malts and a decent, fruity hop kick in the finish. Very enjoyable.

Cask handpull at JDW Spoons Victoria Railway Station. Copper colour with a pale thin lasting beige head. It is an ok, slightly biscuit bitter, ok bitterness on end. Very drinkable bitter with good biscuit malts. Definitely grew on me. Had it again the following day at the Ashford Spoons and the biscuity bitter nature of it really shone through

Cask, stillage, at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading. Amber with a thin white head; malt and orange aromas; woody flavours with some marmalade; sweet, grapefruit bitterness to finish. Rather disappointing.

Cask at The Penny Black, JDW, Bicester, Oxon, 18-04-09 Had this with my breakfast before a big day on the allotment. Poured amber with a white head. There was some streaky citrus wafts on the nose. Taste was light fruits some stringy bitterness, yes it’s a fairly straightforward beer but it was quite decent. A6 A3 F7 P4 Ov13 3.3
