“brewed for the harvest”
This beer begins in spring when oat seeds are sown as soon as the soil can be worked. Meanwhile, select types of barley are planted with hopes that Mother Nature will be kind. Our brewers wait patiently until the legumes are mature and ready for the scythe. Upon delivery to the brewery, these ingredients are mixed together in the mash tun where they steep, creating a rich molasses-like liquid. Spicy hops are boiled with the thick brew, giving balance and complexity. Brewers yeast feasts upon the rich sugars, concluding its transformation into oatmeal stout. Pour Oat into a snifter, allow its thick tan head to slowly rise, releasing unbridled aromas. The color of Oat is as dark as a moonless night. The first sip reveals Oat’s thick and nourishing taste. Like a haversack to a horse, a bottle of this stout is a meal in itself. Enjoy responsibly.

jet black pour with a tiny coffee head that didnt last very long. Aroma is a slap in the face, loads of rosty malt, and the typical full bodied oatmeal aroma. Loads of chocolate, some smoke, mollasses, and soy sauce. Flavour is very full bodied, lots of roastiness, some chocolate, and a big boozy note. the alcohol isvery present, and add lots of warming. A very very nice winter beer, so rich.............its like a bloody meal.

Notes from 1/8/2009. Who the hell thought filling growlers of this was a good idea?! Half pour into my DFH goblet, feeling pretty tonight. First pour a little chilly. A bubbling murky, marshy, cookie dough-colored head. A dense-looking body; rich sateen black paint. Lace drips in even legs, before drying out & getting crusty. A soft, sugar cookie smell wafts through the immediate area upon pouring. A closer sniff gets my head full of molasses & nougat. Cubes of caramel macerating in kvass, gold rum, & a long spray of aerosol. Deceiving when cold, it gets your nostrils flaring once it gets warm. Bittergreen hops strike me first. Doughy char. White bread soaking in your glass of Nesquik. Plenty of residual sugars. A coffee ash & a slightly sharp pruney finish, settling with a little of what I hope isn't oxidation(newspapery). Not nearly as complex as the smell led me to believe. A powdery smoothness going down, but it flares up once you disconnect from the glass. Very tolerable, considering the ABV. Disengaging is difficult. It just flows. I'm not a Southern Tier groupie, but this beer works on some levels. Price was more reasonable on the jug($14) vs. the $7-8-9 that place places charge for 22oz bottles.
