Smooth, dark and dangerous, this ale is designed to warm the cockles of your heart whilst sitting around the ingle after a long cold winter’s day outdoors. Although dark and and robust the aftertones of liquorice and blackcurrant make this an ale of complex character, not to be missed.

Cask @ White Swan, Hebden Bridge. Glowing clear amber-brown with a creamy head. Has extremely light soapy malts for its aroma and taste, and a smoothish texture. Has some sweetness but not much.

Cask at Scottish Real Ale Festival 2014. Clear amber body with a thin white head. Aroma of roasted malts and caramel. Flavour of toffee, berries and apple. Thin body with an oily mouthfeel. Faint carbonation prickle. A lovely beer - nice flavour and complexity.

Cask at Haymarket. Dark amber pour, thin off-white head. Mostly coffee on the nose, some chocolate though. Taste is a bit on the sweeter side of things for me. Not bad.

On cask @ Carter’s Bar, Edinburgh. Appearance - dark amber with a red chink. Decent head. Nose - many characteristics of a bitter but deeper and sweeter. Taste - again more sweetness on the taste than originally expected. Intense toffee. Palate - medium to full bodied, with a creamy texture and not a bad finish. Overall - interesting ale, I’d have had another if it wasn’t closing time.
