Rich, smooth and classy; just like Robert Burns. The bittersweet blend of flavours is derived from the crystal, black and pale ale malts, and fresh, aromatic hops. Dark amber in colour and full-bodied, this is just the sort of ale Burns would have savoured during his time as an officer of the Excise.

Bottle from Sainsburys. Clear amber body with an off-white head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of earth, plum and brown sugar. Flavour of caramel, dumpling and mashed strawberry. Thin to medium body with a slick texture. Soft fizz. True to the style and nicely balanced.

Cask at the halfway house, Edinburgh. It pours clear mahogany brown with a decent off-white head. The nose is earthy, brown bread, dirt, twig and dried fruit. The taste is toasty, brown bread, earth, light caramel and leather with a dry finish. Light-medium body and soft carbonation. Could be done with a touch more body. Ok bitter.

On cask at Au Bar. Appearance - dark brown with red chinks. Nice head. Nose - toffee and biscuit but you have to search. Taste - the toffee is there but astringent malt takes over. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a dry and slightly astringent finish. Overall - solid but hard going at times.

Cask at GBBF 2009. It’s a little bit silly when you know you have had it in pasteurised bottle but not on cask, but hey, wanted to try it. Red/amber thin beige head. Sweetish aroma. No real hop, more a strongish ruby mild than an ESB. OK
