Rich, roasted and creamy, our Mild is an unpretentious ale that has traversed time and is still going strong. It may be on the beer endangered list, but Joseph Holt is still well and truly flying the Mild flag. And for good reason.

Dark in colour and silky smooth in texture, this famous northern drink offers a full and roasted flavour. With an unassuming low 3.2% ABV our dark Mild packs plenty of flavour thanks to the use of black and crystal malts with English cone hops, giving a good amount of bitterness alongside a drop of sweetness with caramel and slight coffee notes – it’s no wonder it was so popular with miners after a hard day’s graft.

Set your sights on this rare brew.

Dark brown colour. Has a light caramel malty sweetness. A shame that this is so watery and thin.

Cask at the Watford Beer Festival 2013. Poured a dark ruby colour with a scummy beige head. Aroma of caramel, roasted malts and leather. Dark fruit flavours with maple and malty sweetness. Palate was quite light with some raisins, burnt toast and sugary syrup.

Gravity cask at the Wandsworth Common Halloween Beer Festival - Le Gothique, London. Pours clear brown with alight, beige foam head. The nose holds well toasted bread, light chocolate and dark fruits. Mellow sweetness in the flavor with dark berries, wet leaves and mild dry chocolate. Light bodied with fine carbonation. Simple finish, more leaves, dried and semi-dark fruits. OK.

Dark brown. Faint aroma of chocolate malt, like an alcoholic Milo. Bitter for a mild. Sweetness then kicks in, but bitterness dominates. Unusual. Holt’s best pint in my opinion. Grateful for the reacquaintance.

On tap @ the Old Monkey, Manchester. Pours dark chestnut to black with quite a lot of glints of light coming through. The nose is not as chocolate as expected, and I would say this was somewhere between a bitter and a mild in reality. The taste is pretty much the same, some chocolate notes, but a lot of biscuity-ness. The palate is medium bodied and textured but the finish lacks elegance being a bit astringent. Overall, it’s ok but unlikely to revisit.
