Old Tom is almost as old as the brewery itself. Dubbed ‘The original craft beer’ this dangerously drinkable legend was born in 1899, when Tom, the old brewery cat, was sketched into immortality by the head brewer. Rich and warming, Old Tom has a distinctive deep port wine finish, with bitter hops balanced by the heady aromas of dark fruit.

Cask at Red Cow, Nantwich (not listed in RateBeer) It’s a sobering thought that I’ve been drinking this beer for at least 38 years ! Anyway, it pours a dark chocolatey brown with a tight cream head. Nose has just a little maltiness, and gives no hint of the wonders to come. Mouth is an exquisite blend of roast malts, molasses, dark fruits and just a hint of coffee. The finish is a boozy haze - with plenty of alcoholic warmth in the throat and stomach ! An absolute classic, to be sipped and savoured. Interestingly the description of it in the pub (which looked like official Brewery material) said it was a “strong mild” – which it definitely isn’t.

Beautiful creamy head stayed on a dark chestnut coloured body. Medium to thin bodied. Soft on the palate. Rich, warming tastes of malt, demerara, coffee & dark spirits. Lovely sipper.

Nice tasty sipper.
Deep ruby color with a thick tan head. Ok intensity in the aroma. Medium + body and a softish carbonation. A bit sweet, yet mellow and balanced. Toffee, dried fruits and a bit vinous.

Dark beer with a thin head and a fruity aroma. Flavour has malt and hop in it but the fruit comes through.

Cask at The Black Horse, Preston. Pours clear mahogany with a thick just-off-white head. Aromas of burnt sugar and fruit cake. taste has more of the same, initally a sugary-boozy hit, but the light bitterness builds to a balance, and a clean finish. Lovely stuff.

NWAF 24 Jan 13. Dyp mørkebrun. Nesten ikke skum. God sviske/plommearoma. Sherrypreg. Varmende. Blir veldig søt - men farlig god.

Cask gravity at Wandsworth Halloween Feat 2013. It pours deep brown with a small beige head. The nose is roasty, toast, berry, jam, earth and red grape. The taste is toasty, earth, berry, smooth roast, mild acidity, jam, cocoa and light alcohol with a dry, fruity finish. Full body, fine carbonation and oily mouth-feel. Tasty, well balanced and rather drinkable. Robinson’s at their best.

Cask @ St Albans Beer Festival, 2013. Morning coffee brown. Aroma of strong alcohol, raisins. Taste is too sweet. Pseudo-bitterness hangs on. Massive chocolate hits when drunk with abandon. Smooth mouthfeel. I feel like this used to be better.

Cask at the Great British Beer Festival 2013. Poured a dark brown colour with no head. Aromas of chestnut, caramel and fruit cake. Malty flavour, cherries and molasses. Palate leaves with cooked apples, spice and alcohol. Tastes stronger than it actually is.
