Mac’s Gold is the talisman of the Mac’s family, an all malt lager brewed naturally with hints of citrus and sweet malts. Mac’s Gold is the First, the Original, the Supreme naturally brewed all malt lager unbroken and therefore unfixed since 1983. It’s remained ahead of the curve, at the bleeding edge (or whatever other piece of metaphorical excess is fashionable this week) thanks to its delicate caramel sweetness and crisp, clean aftertaste. Connoisseurs will note that the mid-palate bitterness and hints of citrus have not been tinkered with.

Nice foam, boring yellow. Inoffensive sweetness on the nose. Flavour is boring lager sweetness. Full on the mouth. Boring, bland, highly average.

330ml bottle(s). Biscuits, lemon, vinegar, peach. Malt dominated, and the sharpness is not too much. Not too bad.

Jug at Adelphi, Kaikoura. Distant hop nose. Pale yellow beer with zero head. A few bubbles. Slight malt taste, vegetal finish. Like VB without the mad carbonation. Cheap rubbish.

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein goldgelbes Bier mit geringer Schaumkrone. Geruch leicht malzig, getreidig, leicht süß. Geschmack wässrig, leicht malzig getreidig, minimal herb.

Spotted this solitary little fellow on the shelf at Drinkers Paradise, Kentish Town and as I saw it’d had such a long journey from NZ I felt I had to try it. Got the impression this is one of those beers NZ beer snobs look down on but it’s actually not that bad. Quite a punchy taste and a notable caramel sweetness. Drinkable.

20/VI/2012 - 33cl bottle @ home - BB: 26/VI/12 (2012-640) Thanks to Thomas and Annelies for the bottle!

Clear gold to light orange beer, nice off-white head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: lots of grains, malts, barnyard, hint of sweetness, some green herbs. MF: ok carbon, light to medium body. Taste: little sour in the start, lemony, some grains, nice refreshing bitterness. Aftertaste: little sweet, malty, nice bitter hoppy ending. Pretty decent lager!
