Tasting notes and ingredients: This is a mild ale style beer brewed with East Anglian pale ale and Crystal malted barley and Boadicea hops. It’s dark red/brown in colour with an aroma of caramel and nutty chocolate. The toffee and chocolate also come through on the palate along with hints of red fruits, all balanced by a smooth bitterness. A traditional speciality winter warmer with flavours of fruit, malt, roast grain, and a hint of caramel.
What’s the story?: Old Ale is based on one of Adnams’ oldest beer recipes which dates back to 1890. It was crowned Champion Beer of East Anglia 2013 by CAMRA.

Cask handpump at The Eels Foot Inn, East Bridge, Suffolk. Friday Christmas Day 25th December 2015 Pours a chestnut colour, some bubbles skittering across the top. Not sure of the style but tastes like a mild to me those typical mild flavours come through, so caramel lightly malty and a bit thin. It’s ok. A6 A4 T6 P3 Ov12 3.1

Cask at the Hope Tap, Reading. Chestnut-brown with a thick, smooth beige head and a light fizz. Chocolate up front and a some red wine. Growing oakiness and a lovely smooth mouthfeel. A little lighter than some old ales, which means that it goes down very easily- I could drink a lot of this. A little leathery dryness in the finish. Nice.

Cask at the Pint Shop, Cambridge. Chestnut brown, clear and flat. Smell of caramel, figs, some smoke, some wood. Taste is a bland sour/sweet with a bitter finish. Surprisingly slight palette, and flat and flat can be. Not overenamoured of this one.
