I have wanted to try a beer from the only American Trappist brewery but could not find one. That changed with a visit to De Bierkoning in Amsterdam. I purchased a 33 cl bottle of the holiday ale and am opening it a day later. A classic bottle cap I point out. It arrives a dark brown liquid with a slender sepia brown head that quickly settles. The nose is spice, cherries and some earthiness. A sip gives me a heavy dose of cloves, malt, grain, cane sugar and a bit of bitterness. Decent but I would prefer to taste the basic brew without the spice flavoring.
