Stumbled upon a bottle of this while cleaning in the cellar, I forgot I ever bought this... Has past its "best before" date by seven years, but since I never rated it, let’s check it out anyway. Pours a vermillion red with still good sparkling, as good as clear but with dark bits of debris floating around here and there; ’old beer’ head, milky and consisting of loose bubbles, light greyish in colour and still retaining quite well. Nose is dominated by sweet oxidized malts (like very old cake), iron and a sourish sweetness of cherry jam, hints of honey, strawberry ice cream, raw red cabbage, young port wine, limoncello and damp cloth. I hesitate to take a sip. In the mouth, red candy, very sweet honey and grenadine prevail at first, sticking to the teeth, a very light sourishness appears (fruity, not from infection) and then some pale malt sweetness comes up, heavily thinned by age, somewhat watery mouthfeel, metallic, with some ’enlightening’ sourishness in the finish to give some balance; thanks to this, the finish is more dry and less cloyingly sweet than I had feared. A very faint, dull and leafy hop bitterishness hides far away in the tail. In all, though I am not a fan of this style and this did suffer from age, it is still quite drinkable and not even the worst sweet ale-based cherry beer I’ve had. Considering the old ratings of this one, I suspect it isn’t made anymore now, so I’m still kind of glad I had the opportunity to get to know it. But I cannot believe the claim that this is based on a brown beer, there is nothing in either looks or taste pointing in that direction... Now let’s move on to the next.

Bottled. A hazy reddish beer with an off-white head. The aroma has notes of almonds as well as lighter notes of cherries. The flavor is sweet with notes of cherries as well as lighter notes of alcohol, leading to a dry cherry finish. Thanks fonefan for sharing.

Bottle, 5%. Yeasty aroma, tiny hint of fruit, a little cherry pit. Cloudy pink colour. Sweet flavour, very perfumy. Soapy aftertaste. Why?
