Black Licorice Lager has flavors of chocolate and roasted malt that complement the additions of Madagascar vanilla bean, anise, and fresh chocolate mint. Vanilla aromas greet the nose and flavors of vanilla and anise are detected. When the beer warms a bit, the finish showcases the crisp, sweet chocolate mint flavors. This well balanced beer is a bronze medal winner at the 2010 World Beer Cup.

Opaque dark brown beer. Crisp palate with decent carbonation. Smooth dark malt with a very slight touch of yeasty marmite. The vanilla sweetness is there as is a little chocolate. The mint is subtle but adds coolness and smoothness. Licorice arrives at the back of the tongue near the finish. A very finely crafted and inventive dark lager. Joe Short is a true master brewer!

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, no bottling date. Pours hazy very dark brown color with a nice 2 finger fairly dense tan head with great retention that reduces to a thick cap. Some spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big chocolate, mint leaves, licorice, vanilla, molasses, roasted malt, biscuit, dark fruit, and a bit of bourbon. Nice and very interesting aromas as I would have expected. Taste of big chocolate, roasted malt, light coffee, licorice, bourbon, vanilla, biscuit, mint leaves, dark fruit, and some herbal spiciness. Some light licorice tartness on the finish; with some lingering notes of chocolate, roasted malt, mint, and licorice on the finish for a bit. Finish is fairly dry. Very nice overall balance of flavors, with no cloying at all. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and slick mouthfeel. Very smooth to drink at 8%. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming on the finish. Overall this is a surprisingly nice and interesting black lager; that is very drinkable and balanced.

At Short’s Brewing Monster Tap Takeover at Churchkey. Poured a dark brown color, tan head. Aroma was mostly mint, though some licorice shown through. The beer was, as my friends described, like mint chocolate chip ice cream. A very unique brew to be sure.

Bottle number 577 of 744 thanks to Styles. 2006 vintage. Pours black with beige head. Interesting nose of black licorice, star anise, vanilla bean and lager yeast. Taste is very smooth. Some chocolate, mint, black licorice and vanilla.

12oz Bottle thanks to Santa. I have been wanting to try this. I love Short’s crazy stuff. Pours out dark brown with red highlights topped with a small tab head. Aroma is of light black licorice, spice, and sweetness. Taste opens up after about an hour the licorice starts to show along with some pitfruit.

Served on draft at the Michigan Summer Beerfest, 2010, as part of RBSG festivities. Pours a dark hazy brown color with a medium brown head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate and the faintest anise notes. The licorice is fairly prominent in the taste, along with bitter roasted malt notes. Quite nice. Medium bodied.

Bottle. Pours black with a completely dissipating brown head. Aroma is full of licorice with some dark grain and a bit of vanilla. Flavor is full of licorice as well with undertones vanilla, mint and chocolate.

12 oz bottle. Pours deep brown with a receding light tan head. Aroma, as advertised, black licorice through and through! Black licorice leads the flavor as well, with some coffee and peanut flavors figuring in as well, a little coolness from the mint perhaps. I love this beer.

750 ml bottle, shared by mreusch. #495 of 744 according to the attached pamphlet. Pour is light haze brown black with a 1/2 inch khaki head. Aroma is big licorice with dark chocolate powder behind that. Taste is roasted malt, black licorice and finishing with the cocoa chocolate. The tastes are well integrated, but just not my thing. Palate is medium bodied, really low carbonation and a long licorice and cocoa finish. Certainly interesting, thanks for sharing this Matt.
