The Terrapin Hop Karma Brown IPA (formerly known as the India Style Brown Ale) is a head-on collision between a hoppy west coast IPA and a complex malty brown ale. Brewed with 5 varieties of hops and 7 different malts, this hybrid style represents the best of both worlds.

As india Brown. On tap. From old notes. Rich amber malts, caramel, chocolate. Nicely hopped as well. A very nice hoppy brown ale.

Reviewed from notes. Rcvd in trade. Consumed 3/13/13.
The pour has a dark brown color and leaves the same colored body slightly clear around the edges, two finger off white foamy head gently recedes and leaves some spider web foamy lacing in the wake.
The smell has the hops up front, subdued malts trying to get through but mostly stays underneath the hops, gets slightly nutty as it warms
The taste is bittersweet through a nice combination of hops to malts, slightly nutty.
The palate is about medium on the body, comes across sessionable, and has a slightly sweet aftertaste and a sticky finish.
Overal, whether an American Brown Ale or an American IPA, I like it for the most part, good example of a hybrid between the two that I would have again.

Bottle. Pours a leathery brown with quite a bit of light poking through and a quickly-dying head. Initial impression of the aromas is that it has a heavy smell of dates and figs with little hops presence, but flavor starts there and transitions to a sort of non-defined hop bitterness with some of that brown sugar-like edge poking through. The beer is interesting, but solid.

12 ounce bottle. Clear deep mahogany brown color topped by a big rocky beige head. Fragrant toasted malt aroma with notes of brown sugar and plums. Rich toasted malt flavor with a spicy, peppery hop backdrop. Slightly tangy with a chewy dried fruit resonance. Reminiscent of toasted nuts and raisins. Overall, a very tasty and unique combination of complex malts and hops.

Bottle. Pours clear ruby brown with a medium tan head and nice lacing. Aroma is pine, caramel, roasted malts. Flavor is the same, touch of coffee. Light sweet, light bitter. Medium body. Not bad.

From a 12 oz bottle at Jakes on Main. Pours a cola brown with an off white head. Sweet malt aroma. Flavors if caramel and toffee with a big hop kick. The combo works surprisingly well.
