An imperial golden lager balanced between malt sweetness and dry hop flavors, yet darker in color and richer in finish.
When our Dortmunder Lager won its first gold medal in 1990, its regal status was set. But for our golden anniversary in 2008, we took it one step further with this imperial golden lager. Brimming with the same balance as our original award-winner but with a darker color and slightly higher ABV. 20 years never tasted so good (not that you can’t drink this to celebrate 28 or more).

12 oz bottle. Pours golden amber with a small head that disappears quickly. Aromas of banana and very light hops. Flavor is sweet, malts, banana, some bitter hops. I appreciate the hoppy bitter finish. Eh, not too bad.

This beer pours a clear amber-gold color with a medium and fluffy off-white head that recedes slowly. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Lots of bread and malt in the nose, along with a touch of hops. Medium-bodied with a strong malt character. Flavors of grassy hops, grain and fruit are evident as well. The finish is malty and sweet with a lingering bready aftertaste. ABV is not very noticeable. Overall this is an interesting experiment but I’d rather stick with the "regular" Dortmunder when it comes down to it.

Fairly clear orange/amber body with effervescent carbonation, thin-medium clumping tight off-white head. Grassy nose with wet hay and clover honey. Tangy. Biscuity body with leafy, spicy hops, floral, backed with light sweet malts. The balance is tilted towards the hops, which finish the beer in bitter, leafy fashion. The cookie dough and lemon that make Dortmunder Gold so appealing are subdued here. Solid, still.

Thanks to black95tt for sending this one! Clear dark yellow with a minimal off-white head. Sweet candy aroma, hops are in the background, almost covered up by the malt. Creamy, full bodied with a sweet palate. No bitterness.

Bottle. Pour is a remarkably transparent amber with a minimal head that has completely died back by now... just a few stray bubbles around the surface. Aromas are of grains and breads. Flavor sucks. It gets totally overwhelmed by the alcohol... so even though there are some grain and banana things going on in the background, the astringent alcohol really gets in the way. This is a fairly big disappointment.

12 oz. bottle courtesy goryshkewych... Thanks George! Best by 10/07/08. Golden pour, viscous looking with minimal head. Slightly bitter aroma of grass, fruit and grain. Honey sweet taste with some apple like fruitiness and subtle hop bitterness. Very nice.
