An imperial golden lager balanced between malt sweetness and dry hop flavors, yet darker in color and richer in finish.

When our Dortmunder Lager won its first gold medal in 1990, its regal status was set. But for our golden anniversary in 2008, we took it one step further with this imperial golden lager. Brimming with the same balance as our original award-winner but with a darker color and slightly higher ABV. 20 years never tasted so good (not that you can’t drink this to celebrate 28 or more).

Bottle. Clear, golden body with frothy off-white head that is mostly diminishing. Fruity sweet aroma of apricot jelly with notes of grain, caramel and alcohol. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Dry, bitter finish with notes of peppery alcohol. Medium body with a smooth texture and somewhat muted carbonation. The extra hop presence is nice, but the alcohol is too forward. The dortmunder gold is preferable.

12 fl oz bottle, courtesy of Papsoe. Pours clear and golden orange with a small white head. Smooth citrusy hops aroma. Flavour is sweet malty yet also quite fruity on the hops side. Light fruity finish with a nice caramel malt base. Nicely balanced and not too sweet.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of fiver29. Clear deep golden with a yellowish off-white head. Sweetish aroma of malt with a hint of citrusy hops. Quite full-bodied with plenty of sweet malt and flowery hops. Rather subdued bitterness. 041008

Deep golden colour with a thin head. Big malt nose with slight cidery notes. Intimidatingly rich dortness. Full body. Sweet malt. Creamy, pleasant pale malt development. Fairly dry in the finish, which it really needed to be. Slight toasty accents. Good.

Bottle: Poured a clear deep golden color lager with a large foamy head with average retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of sweet malt with some notes of dry Noble hops. Taste is also dominated by some sweet malt notes with a dry lightly bitter European dominated hops finish. Body is quite full for the style with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Not bad overall but I still think the regular version is more interesting then the imperial version.

Mildly volatile olfactory. Half inch head fades rapidly. A little darker than pale yellow with visible streams of carbonation within. Strong up front taste bud rototillling. Coarse but yet does not trigger gag reflex. Bitterly interesting and oppressing. Good way to deliver a 7+ alky blast. Lacks manners; turpentine and strong alky in yer faceness, ammicably crude. Finish is like lasting nagging bitter medicine, this stuff is double imperial dortness. Very difficult toward the end.

bottle - Pours deep golden with a one finger white head. It smells of bready malt, some nice fruit easters, and a hint of hops. The flavor is sweet malt with a light fruit background, mild hops, and a little alcohol presence that mainly makes itself be known in the finish. I actually really enjoy this one, so I’m going to have to break with the pack a bit and agree with my fellow Hoosier and prior rater, BBB63. Very nice beer.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark golden color with a huge yellow-white head. The aroma was sweet, fruity and sour. The flavor was sweet, tangy, malty and had a moderately strong floral hop element. The finish was tangy. The body was fairly thick. Reminded me of a maibock.

Orange with a tight, off-white head. Herbal hops, light citrus, grass, and biscuit malts in the aroma. The alcohol is well hidden under the fresh citrus, light herbal hops, caramel, and crisp biscuit malts. Full bodied. Very pleasant beer. Happy 20th, GLBC!
