Double the malt, double the hops, and double the flavor of the original Rye Pale Ale recipe. (Hence the name Rye Squared.) With its mammoth hop aroma, bitterness and flavor, this beer is not for the faint at heart. The Rye Squared clocks in at a hefty 8.5% ABV so double your pleasure and double your fun because Terrapin went a little crazy with this one!
The first keg of Rye Squared went on tap at Tasty World in Athens on Monday April 25th 2005. A special thank you goes out to the newly formed Terrapin Keg Killers. We were told that Tasty World would put the Rye Squared on as soon as they finished off a keg of a "Select" beer they had on tap. When the Terrapin Keg Killers heard about this they went to Tasty world and finished off that other keg in record time. By 10pm on Monday they were enjoying the fruits of their labor when the first ever Rye Squared keg went online.
Malt: 2-row pale, Munich, Malted Rye, Bisuit Malt, Honey Malt.
Hops: Amarillo, Cascade, East Kent Goldings, Fuggle, Magnum

From Jul 2007

I got this one in a trade with brentk56. Thanks Brent!

This pours from 12oz bottle(2007 vintage) a clear amber with a medium sized head of foam. After a couple of minutes, there's only a small island left and there's very little lacing.

The smell has a lot of caramel malt that I noticed immediately upon opening the bottle. I like malty beers so this could be good.

The taste is as big on the caramel malt as the nose. I'm also getting slight notes of butterscotch and when I swish the ale in my mouth, I get just the slightest hint of hop bitterness. This one is definitely all about the malt and I'm really enjoying sipping on it.

A few more sips in and I'm getting an earthy background that slowly climbs to near the forefront but stops just short. Also, the hop bitterness becomes a little more pronounced but again, this is one heck of a malty brew yet it doesn't become *too* sweet for me and, as a plus, the alcohol is hidden pretty well. Good mouthfeel here and the finish is semi-dry and it leaves a fairly long aftertaste. Pretty darn yummy in my book!

A lightly hazed reddish amber ale with a thick frothy lacing mocha head. In aroma, sweet fruity caramel malt with treacle, grassy floral hops, surranated, earthy and smooth. In mouth, a sweet fruity caramel malt with fruity esters, light honey, alcohol warmth, resinous floral hops, treacle, very nice after a few years. Bottle.

Bottle. Poured a copper color with a medium sized white head. Aroma was a strong maltly one, with citrus hops. Flavor was citrus hops, rye with solid malt backing. Alcohol is covered up real well.

This bottle is around ten months old. The age helps. Not the prettiest beer, but the aroma is heavy on the rye and malt, sweet yet giving off a few alcohol fumes as well. Tastes pretty darn good, full of orange and honeybun, yet with a rye tang that keeps things interesting, plus a strong hop finish that prevents the brew from growing too sweet. The heat rears its head as the beer warms, meaning that, while Rye Squared is tasty, it’s best enjoyed in small doses. (2/27/09)

On tap at the Nook. The pour is dark orange with a large foamy, off-white head. The aroma is apples, citrus hops, some light resin and pine, and syrup. The flavor is intense, but pleasant bitterness, with a nice malt backbone. The palate is heavy, thick and creamy. Overall, a big, smooth and surprisingly drinkable IPA.

bottle pours amber with a medium creamy tan head. Aroma is very dank, lots of herbal citrus hops, grapefruit, juicy peach. Flavor is rich and sweet with tons of rye and caramel malt notes balanced with a healthy dose of sweet citrus hops that linger in the finish.

Bottle - again thanks to mixmasterob. Pours a golden orange color with a small, creamy beige head. Nose of sweet citrus and caramel malts, very faint bready bits. Lots of citrus and sweetness from the caramel in the flavor with rye being somewhat on the backburner. I like the little hints of bitters from seemingy piney hops before a dryer rye piece. Finishes dry and with plenty of bite. This is just delicious stuff!
