Black Bavarian

(Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 30 Sep) Pitch black colour with brown, disappearing, head. Malty nose with soft notes of chocolate and coffee with milk. Roasted taste with chocolate, hints of smoke and well balanced notes of citrussy hops in the finish. Rather dry, medium body. Very good and balanced, but wouldn’t suffer from some more punch.

Bottled. Very dark brown, not much head. Burnt malts, brown sugars in the nose. Malty, roasted malty with burnt sugars. Toasted/burnt aftertaste. Balanced profile.

[Bottled at Stockholm Beer Festival] Very dark brown, small head. Roasty coffee aroma. Light bodied with clean mouthfeel. Centered around the roasty malt, it’s fragile intriguing malt flavours are really something extra. The hard mouthfeel distracts, and prevents it from becoming world class.

Pours very dark, much like a stout, with a quickly dissipating brown head. Aroma is of burnt malts and coffee. The flavor is burnt malt with a coffee influence. There are supporting flavor notes coming from a bit of molasses sweetness and dark chocolate. This beer is light in carbonation and light in body. Might even be a bit on the watery side. Nice taste, good beer.

Pours ruby black into a shaker. Brown conglomerate head slowly recedes leaving no lacing. Prune, fig, and caramel malt notes. Upfront chocolate and dried fruit with an thin, sweet, smokey lasting finish.

Bottle. Strong molasses aroma. Black-brown color with little head. Strong molasses malt. Has more of a stout flavor than a schwarzbier.

Pour is a deep black with a small tan head. Aroma is roasty and malty. Flavor is chocolate, coffee and caramel with a touch of hops thrown in there. Very nice and satisfying.

2004 bottle from Heemer77, thanks! Stupendously thick, rich, dark pour. Looks almost like a nitrogen tap. Viscous, creamy and has a perfectly formed, long-lasting oatmeal colored head. Unfortunately, it seems to be rather filtered. Smells of light milk chocolate, sweet toffee, anise, hints of oily roast and some slight yeastiness. A dried out, dusty, almost ash-like note on the end of the nose, as well. Flavor begins with a balanced mix of sweet and dry. You’ve got more oily roast as noted from the nose, mixing with a medium sweet caramel/toffee-like flavor. Brown sugar, tons of creamy milky chocolate and then the coffee. It’s like a cup of dunkin donuts coffee, with a packet of sugar and some milk in it. Slightly watery, not terribly challenging, but still pretty good. Finishes with more brown sugar/brown malt appeal. A touch on the sweet side overall, but the lager element serves to keep the beer from getting very heavy and adds a touch of crisp yeastiness on the finish.

Bottle Pours a black with dark brown edges, a nice light tan head and seriously lasting lacing. Aromas are of dark roast malts coffee and chocolate. Flavors are much the same. Chocolate than coffee. Notes of black leather, (dont ask me how I know what black leather tastes like) and some smokey hitts as well Swwet enough that it is not too bitter and quite drinkable. Feel is very smooth. Slick even. After tastes lacks any unpleasant bitterness. All around a great "Black Beer"
