[Cask at Back of Beyond, Reading, April 2008] Odd - a traditional best bitter flavour (despite the pale colour) on the foretaste, a huge hit of ginger and chilli on the aftertaste - in the manner of having a teaspoon of the dried spice just after finishing your beer. Very unusual, and rather enjoyable provided you don’t mind losing your sense of taste for some time after! Not sure I’d want an entire pint for fear of indigestion or a digestive cataclysm. Definitely one to split opinions.

Cask, as Easton Spice (4.5%), end of cask@Kitty’s. Mildly hazy yellowish golden colour with mediumsized fluffy head. Aroma is some spices, herbs as well as caramel malts and some fruityness. Flavour is really spicy, almost tabascoish burning. at first red tabasco, when warming almost habanero hot. The spices pretty much cover everything except a certain bitterness. I like my spices in food, not necessarily in a beer...

Cask-conditioned at the Crosse Keys (JDW), City of London 3/4/08. Deep, hazy gold with a decent white head. Aroma of ginger with some peppery hops. The flavour began slightly sweet before some big spicing kicked in - the ginger was fine but the chilli was a bit crude, leaving a tingling sensation on the lips. Ok as a novelty.

Cask handpull at County Hotel, JDW, Ashford. Gold with thin ivory head. Quite an inviting aroma of mixed spice and the base beer is fine, but oh dear, the spice is rather unsubtle and unintegrated. Ginger and chillis really come through. Aroma is rather good. OK golden bitter, bit too much chilli on finish for me, but still, makes a change to standard bitters/golden ales.
