Southampton Abbot 12 is our version of a Belgian Abbey-style Dark Ale. This unique style of ale is referred to as "Quadruple" and is brewed by only a few Belgian Trappist breweries. Southampton Abbot 12 is made with imported ingredients and is formulated to allow the beer to age for several years in the bottle.

(10/25/08) Bottle at the brewpub in Southampton. Deep ruby color with a medium beige head. Aroma of malt, caramel, plenty of dark fruits (plums, some grapes, raisins notes) and yeasty notes. Sweet malty flavor with caramel, brown sugar and dark fruits. A drier, slightly spicy and slightly alcoholic, finish. Rather full-bodied with lots of carbonation.

Bottle thanks to JB175. Pours with a huge, fluffy, off-white head and a clear brown body (too light for the style). Good lacing. Aroma of dark fruits, brandy, bananas, pears, spices, some bubblegum, dates and molasses. Taste is sweet throughout with dark fruits some alcohol, spices, molasses, sherry, and raisins. Warming, with a creamy mouthfeel and lively bubbles.

Bottled. Amber colour, small beige head. Aroma is raisins, toffee, alcohol and some sweet malts. Raisins, some sweet nectary notes, alcohol and fruityness in the flavour. Wellbalanced, and very drinkable brew.

A big thanks to Stine for sharing a bottle of a beer I have wanted to try for years. First, I think this was too young. It is sugary sweet, even in a style that tends to be sweet, and it would probably benefit from a year or two in the cellar. But this is still something special. Very nice fruit and malt aroma with Belgian yeast. Thick and heavy palate with loads of malt. Fruit and yeast in the flavor, lots of malt, and exceptionally full palate and great, smooth mouthfeel. Brown it color, it left a nice lacing on the glass and had a tall head that took some time to fall down.

2006 750ml bottle from beastiefan2K; Thanks Eugene! I have been holding this one for a long time for a Big Rating! #1700! Nose is molasses, yeast, candi sugar, and some pruney fruitiness; very lightly hazy dark brown with a small straw head; flavor has molasses, raisin pie (like my Mom used to make), brown sugar, and a light alcohol note; finish is molassesy and a hint of the 10%!

tasted this again at the 2009 RBEXTPGH> Had the pleasure of sampling this at the 1/27/2008 Pittsburgh ratebeer.com gathering upstairs, Sharp Edge Creekhouse. It will be a long time, if ever, I see a spread of bottles like I did there - ever again. I am not good enough for the beers that were that we sampled! For example, how about this beer; S.H. Abbot 12! Sweet strong aroma, you know this has a kick right from the olfactory. Slightly darker than the typical pale ale. Surprisingly good carbonation for a quad, makes it much more acceptable. Not as strong on the palate as the 10% would indicate. Barely over the top. Acceptable to the lager lover.
