Southampton Abbot 12 is our version of a Belgian Abbey-style Dark Ale. This unique style of ale is referred to as "Quadruple" and is brewed by only a few Belgian Trappist breweries. Southampton Abbot 12 is made with imported ingredients and is formulated to allow the beer to age for several years in the bottle.

Sampled from a 750 ml corked brown bottle this beer poured a caramel-brass color with a huge light tan head. The aroma was a fabulous blend of sweet malts, caramel and ripe fruits. The flavor was a wonderful blend of sweet and tangy malts with noted caramel and elements of cherry and pear. The mouthfeel was a bit spritzy for such a heavy beer.

2006 public house bottling. 750 ml bottle shared by beastiefan2k. Pour is a hazed copper orange brown topped with a smallish light white head. Aroma is light sweet caramel malt, with some grass behind that and banana yeast. Taste is the sweet caramel malt, along with the spice Belgian yeast, a bit of grass, dry foral, banana in the back. Palate is medium bodied, low carbonation, finishes with some rye spice. Quite a bit going on in this one, nice. Thanks for digging into the vault Eugene.(7,4,7,4,14 - 3.6)

750ml bottle provided by Indra at my tasting on 10/12. Pour is dark garnet red with no head, which clings to side of the glass. Aroma is caramel sweet malt, big full body. Taste is raisins, Belgian yeast and a really nice full malt body. (7,3,8,4,14 - 3.6)

Bottle from Duff drunk at Chris_o’s HogTownHarry meet up. Hazy amber, thick lasting beige. Smells like a Belgian wit to start with. Some brown sugar, Belgian yeast. Too sweet in mouth. Really odd. Fruity. Tooe sweet. "Yewh" from Duff, apparently.

Cloudy dark amber color with red shades. Malty and with a lot of caramel. Also maltier taste than many others, some sweetness, too much candi sugar. Powerful, pleasant to drink, but too much monodimensional.

(Bottle 75 cl) Courtesy of moejuck. Pours a hazy, orangey brown with an off-white head. Aroma is of overripe fruit, roasted malt and alcohol. Quite full and potent body with lots of caramel, overripe fruit and a warming alcohol in the finish. 230407

RB 300. Sample from bottle. Pours brown. Aroma is caramel malty so is the flavour. Strong belgian yeast (fruit notes) and alcohol notes. Good sweet and spicy finish.

2006 vintage from puzzl. Plummy, hazy red-brown body, medium off-white head. Aroma of toffee, brown sugar, and sweet toasts, a bread pudding complete with spicy esters derived from the yeast. Plummy, sweet breads dominate the flavor profile, too, with toffee and plenty of spice. Alcohol is suitably warming. Very good but not quite top echelon material, lacking the depth and complexity of the top quads. The carbonation is a tad too robust.

Bottle courtesy of Adrian910ss: Poured a deep burgundy color ale with a big off-white foamy head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of sweet malt with some hints of dry fruits (figs and plums). Taste consisted of some sweet malt with some very subtle Belgian yeast and some very subtle dry fruits such as figs and plums. Body is slightly above average with no alcohol discernable. I don’t know if my expectation were too high or if I got another so-so bottle of Southampton but I wasn’t impressed at all and thought this was quite far from the staple of the style (Rochefort, Westy, St-Bernadus).

Dark brown ale witg a creamy off white head. Rather oxidized malt with lots of butterscotch notes, a bit nutty. In mouth, a rather boring ale with nuts and butterscotch. Rich and smooth, but overall, a let down. Bottle at BCTC 2006.
